Ocean Pearl Kara (October 10, 1997 - November 4, 2014)

At the tender age of 17 Ocean Pearl Kara, also known as Oceana, joined her sister Jessica Miracle, who died at birth August 14, 1996.

Ocean touched the lives of many including her mother, Kim Wendy Kara, and numerous friends: young and old. She once said, "It takes a tornado to make a rainbow for me." This is the theme for her celebration of life, held at Southminster-Steinhauer United Church located at 10740 19 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6J 6W9 on Saturday November 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm. This is the same location where she and Janelle Hillestad held their Dessert Silent Auction to raise funds to build a house for a family in Mexico on March 9, 2012. (Please see their blog at www.dontjustpopulate.blogspot.com.) In lieu of flowers donations will be used to create a Hero Holiday ~ Live Different fund in her name. Contact the family to make donations.
  1. My memories of Ocean are of a girl always extending kindness and love to those around her, myself included. I remember Kim and Ocean seated on the grass at the stake center, or seeing the pair walking through the greenry of their community, both quick to smile and help those around them. My heart is grateful that Ocean touched my life and I am the better for knowing her. To Kim, I extend my most heartfelt condolences and prayers for peace and comfort.

    • Nikki,
Thanks for your memories, and the beautiful painting.
      Kim

  2. Dear Kim
I’m so very sorry for your loss.
I don’t know if you even remember me. I was going through some of my treasured things today and there was the little painted shell with a pearl and Ocean’s name.
My prayers are with you and Ocean.
    Colleen

Yes I remember you and all you did when Ocean was a baby.
I still have the angel with the crystals in my window, making rainbows.

  7. Dear Kim
Having just found out recently about Ocean’s death leaves me so very saddened and numb. I cannot conceive of your heartache and sorrow over the loss of your shining star. I will always remember Ocean’s infectious smile and how inseparable you were. I can’t imagine a greater loss. We want you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers as her first anniversary is almost upon us. My heart goes out to you.
    With our deepest sympathy,
    Dave and Tudie

    • Thank you Helen (Tudie),
It was great talking with you the other day.
      Thank you for the memories.
I love the sweet picture of Ocean sitting at the piano with Aunt Helen… and then the one with Mary holding her. I still have Aunt Helen’s bag that you made for her: for my sign language books… and the little ceramic floral arrangement is in Granny’s tea pot.
Your depth of understanding is incredibly supportive. Thank you for that.
      Sincerely,
      Kim

  8. Dearest Ocean Pearl:
Sweetheart, so sorry that your Mother taught you not to speak to me. Maybe I could have helped. “I Love You”. Babcia
P.S. When you were 4, you gave me a smiling doll. I still keep it on or near my bed. May God shine upon you!

  9. All I can say in response is to share the lyrics of a song that came to me repeatedly:

    If I Die Young

Lord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother
She’ll know I’m safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh,
And life ain’t always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain’t even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
    I’ve had just enough time

Thankfully other people treat me with compassion understanding the “sharp knife of a short life”.

Thank you, my girl, for finding ways to create rainbows without a cloud! 🙂

  10. I wish you knew that at some point in life everyone goes through that bump in the road but the trick is to hold on cause it gets better. Life gets better. Wish you were here to celebrate your upcoming birthday. I miss you Ocean. I’m always thinking of you.
