The late Peter Horon

Peter Horon fell ill suddenly and two days later passed away at the age of 75 years on Sunday, January 17th 2016 at 8:06 a.m. at the U of A Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Peter was born on September 16 1940, in the farming district of New Kiew, north of Lavoy AB, to Tom and Anne Horon. He grew up on the family farm-- now still in his name--and attended the Krasne (“Beautiful” so named when it was built) district school. Peter went on to graduate from Two Hills High School.

Having completed a University Education degree, Peter was a teacher for 36 years, beginning in Innisfree and then moving to teach in Edmonton, where he made his home with his family. (His parents’ family farm, on which Peter grew up, has been in the Horon family for over one hundred years, starting with his grandfather. Peter was very proud to be part of that family history and heritage and was involved in one way or other in helping to maintain it as such over the years.) After retiring from teaching, he continued with full-time hobby farming there until his passing.

In Edmonton, he was an active member of many organizations, including the AUUC Ukrainian Centre (where he was the current President) and where he participated for many years in the Trembita Ukrainian Choir and took an active part on the Board, many times, as well as on various committees. He was also President of the Alberta Ukrainian Heritage Foundation.

Peter was the most caring, generous, helpful, and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend that one could have. He supported his daughters with their baseball leagues throughout the last 35 years as a coach.

In the community and Ukrainian Centre Peter was a leader, an organizer, manager, and supportive member with loads of optimism, empathy and human relations skills. He enjoyed life, was a happy, positive person, always leaving people with lasting positive impressions, be it with friends, colleagues or strangers.

Peter was extremely fond of Cuba, which he--along with his family--visited many times, where he had many friends and lots of lasting memories. Cuba could easily be considered to have been Peter’s second home ... “we wouldn't be surprised if Castro himself sends his condolences!!”

Peter is survived by his loving wife Elsie, two daughters Sheryl (Ken) and Leanne (Chris, Tristan), four sisters Olga, Lillie, Vera (Roy), Veronica (David), and one brother Victor (Olga). It is with great sadness, much love and fond memories that his family now says good-bye to him.

At Peter's request, there will be no funeral held; however a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

We wish to convey our very special thanks to the excellent and caring and professional staff in the U of A Trauma Unit (3F2) who gave exceptional care for Peter while in a two-day coma.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Peter's memory
to STARS ambulance.

  1. Not only was Mr. Horon a kind man, he was easy to talk with and genuinely fun to be around no matter what age group he was surrounded by. He had a calming nature about him and it was clear that he loved his family very much.
I didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked with him but the time that I did spend will always leave a lasting impression in my heart.

    Rest In Peace Mr. Horon

  2. I behalf of June, Phil and myself I wish to express our deepest condolences on the untimely loss of a great father and husband. Our thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time.

  3. Peter and Elsie gave me my best friend and I will love them eternally for that. For over 22 years Peter was a friend, a mentor, and even like a Father to me (especially when Sheryl and I would get ourselves in trouble!) He was always there for us- and for all who knew him- to teach us, to guide us, and to love us. Peter will live on in our hearts ?

  4. On behalf of my wife, Mellissa and daughters Danielle and Sarah as well as my parents Julian and Emily Duk from Vegreville and I wish to express our deepest condolences on the untimely departure of a loved husband and trusting father. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.

  5. Sending my deepest sympathy. I can’t imagine the the huge loss your family must be facing at this time. I pray you are all, able to cherish your precious memories..
    RIP

  6. My warmest heart felt condolences, Elsie, to you and your family.
    God Bless.

  7. I wish to express my condolences on the loss of a wonderful teacher. Mr. Horon was one of my first cooperating teachers during my training at the University of Alberta. At that time he taught at Wellington Junior High. I will be forever grateful for his patience and his kindness. I went on to teach for 34 years and often thought of his mentorship many times when I had my own student teachers.

  8. Our deepest sympathy to you, Elsie, and your family. Peter was a great help to me when I started teaching. He had such grace and humor and contributed his knowledge and time generously. That smile I see in the picture is the one I remember so well. Even after he retired from teaching he still came around to give a helping hand. We cheered up instantly when he arrived. Peter and your family are in our prayers.

  9. Dear Elsie and family,

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Peter’s sudden passing. I know he will be deeply missed by all who knew him as he had a warm, humble and gentle personality. His loss will especially be felt by the Ukrainian community, of which he was a pillar and a proud member. May he rest in peace, and his memory be eternal…

  10. Our heartfelt condolences to you all during this time. Over the last 40+ years, as a performer, teacher and parent of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, I had the pleasure of working with the Peter. We created a wonderful dance camp experience for many years. He was always there for us all — Papa Peter!
Whenever we met, our times working together were thoughtful, creative — with the ability to get the jobs done — no fuss or muss! Our times with Peter (and Elsie) were some of the best! Dance camps, planning events and trips for our young members were wonderful experiences for us both and would not have been possible without the stewardship of Peter and his most capable right-hand Elsie.
Jennifer will never forget his kindness and opportunities he offered to her.
Peter enriched our lives in ways that cannot be articulated adequately.

Elsie, to you and your family, we want to say, so very sorry for your loss, but know that his time was invaluable to so many and for that his memory will live on in ours.

  11. Dear Elsie & Family, Victor & Olga & Family–we’re saddened to learn of Peter’s passing. Through the years that Anne & Darcy & I participated in the many cultural activities at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, and with Tom, attended many wonderful social events (Malanka, the concerts, etc.) it has been our delight to know you and Peter through those times. Peter was passionate about his heritage and about the Ukrainian community as a whole. His hard work as a member of Council inspired many.
We extend our very heartfelt condolences to Elsie, Victor & Olga, their families. While this is a difficult time for all of you, we hope that your vast treasury of memories will help ease the pain of loss, and that these same wonderful memories will bring all of you Peace of Spirit in the days and years ahead. Vichnaya Pamyat! His Memory be Eternal.

  12. Elsie, Leanne, Sheryl, so sorry for your loss.
The photo you have selected is how I will remember him: happy, upbeat, confident and enthusiastic. Peter has provided us with many happy memories which we might not have experienced were it not for his efforts and his enthusiasm.

  13. Mrs H, Sheryl and Leanne
I was saddened to hear. I have many memories of Mr H and all of you as Sheryl and I grew up together.
Please know I am thinking of you.

  14. When I first glanced at the picture in the obituary and then I saw the name, I knew this man instantly…and the first thing I said was, “Awwww…Mr. Horon passed away!” Now I’m 46 and haven’t seen Mr. Horon for over 30 years…. but I remembered his name. I remember he was my teacher and although I can’t remember what he taught me, or where…. (I’m leaning towards social studies at Wellington)…. I DID remember that at one time I liked this gentleman and I remember he was a teacher that I respected way back when. So sorry to hear of his sudden passing. That is a terrible shock to the family and he really was so young… Although I do not know you…and I only knew Mr. Horon 33 years ago…. I know he was a great teacher… passionate about I’m sure it was social studies…. and I’m sure it was him who influenced me to do well and and love social….I’m sure I’m having flashbacks of sitting in Wellington junior high with Mr. Horon teaching me about Russia. 🙂 I’m so sorry for your loss but I just wanted to share my reaction when I saw his picture in the paper. He was one of those teachers that although those memories have long been buried under the hustle and bustle of my job… whe I saw his picture…I remembered that at one time he was a teacher I enjoyed and admired.

  15. My deepest Condolences to the family…..

  16. Peter Horon was a favorite uncle. I have fond memories of helping out with my dad and Uncle Peter during harvest at the farm when I was an adolescent. I learned to drive a standard shift, fire a shotgun, drink Postum, eat five full meals during a full day of hard work, and stand knee deep in a granary shovelling grain out there to name just a few of my fondest memories.

Teresa, the kids and I want Auntie Elsie and my cousins, Sheryl and Leanne, to know how much we loved, respected, and enjoyed Uncle Peter and all that he shared with us. The thought that we won’t see him again, won’t get to listen to him share his thoughts about the current politics of the day, won’t get to ride with him on the tractor with the kids ever again are all things that we will dearly miss.

I already miss him, because I cant reconcile the thought that he won’t be there to visit with the next time we get back out to Edmonton and Vegreville.

    Sincerely,

    Brent

  17. Mrs. Horon, Leanne, and Sheryl,
