With sadness, we have lost our amazing brother, cousin, friend, uncle Peter James Minaker, after a fierce but short battle with cancer. Peter, born January 5, 1960, died January 27, shortly after his 57 birthday.

Peter worked for Telus as a telephone equipment installer for 35 years and had recently retired. With Telus he travelled to England and to the southern United States as part of an international switch installation team. He was looking forward to a new chapter in his life.

At home he enjoyed NASCAR races and over the years he collected older vehicles and parts with the idea of restoring them after he retired. He also enjoyed skiing and travelling to visit friends and family.

He was a very loving son/brother to his parents and family, and a loyal friend to the many people he met as he travelled through life. He was a truly caring, carefree and gentle soul who will be missed by many.

Peter is pre-deceased by his parents Douglas and Doris Minaker of Milford, Ont.
He is survived by his siblings Garry (Helen) of Stony Plain, Bill (Jean) of Picton Ont., Lynne Joakim (Andy) of Kitchener Ont., Al (Lyn) of Edmonton, and Dean of Bruderheim, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Sincere thanks to Norwood Palliative Hospice and the special people there who made his last days as comfortable as possible, especially his friend Kate Bentley.

  6. To My “Doug Minaker” Cousins
Syd and I were so sorry to hear of Peter’s illness and passing. I remember playing with Peter when we were kids and I also remember how worried my family was when he fell from the rafters in the barn.
As an adult he did remind me so much of Uncle Doug, both in appearance and in personality.
I commend you all for the loving care that you provided during Peter’s illness and I know that you will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with you.

  7. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Minaker family during this difficult time. Barry worked with Peter at Telus and it was always a positive start to his day to meet Peter at the coffee station in the mornings as Peter always had a smile on his face and was in good spirits. May the thought of him no longer suffering, and the fact that the family did everything they could for him, bring you solace. These dark days will pass. . . . And your memories of Peter will Last a lifetime.
    Love Brenda and Barry

  8. To Doug and Doris’s Family.
Ron and I are so sorry to hear about Peter’s passing. I remember Peter playing with Ron at various family events. I always thought of Peter as having so many of the wonderful qualities that we associate with the Minaker family. I remember Peter entertaining Art and me, Ken and Carole and Floyd & Bernice and Keith and Sally in Edmonton between Cora-Lee’s wedding and the reception. Peter was a gracious host and we had a wonderful time. Our thoughts are with you all.

Peter worked with me at AGT in Edmonton and on his international assignments with ATI Telecom. 17. Our condolences to Pete’s family. We know that he is in a better place. Certainly has a seat next to our Lord. Pete’s calm, caring, warm and friendly deposition is everything we strive to be. Pete just naturally had this. He made sure this was shared with everyone. We can only hope that part’s of our day’s are lived with a little of how Pete would have enjoyed it.

  18. I have known Smilie (Pete) and his family for a very short time. I wished I had met them under different circumstances. They are all a beautiful caring family. I know Smilie appreciated and loved their care, concern and time that they shared with him. It broke my heart that he was not able to enjoy his retirement. He is our angel now, he will be missed. His family will be in my heart forever. Sending love and prayers to all who’s life he touched.

  19. Pete has been our friend and neighbor for 18 years. He was always there for us when we needed. He will be greatly missed. Not seeing him anymore with a smile on his face and a good morning or hello, will be greatly missed. Pete is now at peace and Smiling down on us. We send love and prayers out to his family.

  20. Peter and I stayed in touch many years after leaving the county. A great friend. Since we both enjoyed the field of motor vehicles and motor vehicles in fields, there are lots of good memories. Going to miss the stop ins while flying past Stony Plain. Punch it sideways Pete!

  21. I am so saddened to hear of Peter’s passing. I first met Peter in the 1980’s through work at AGT and we remained in touch ever since. Peter would often stop and see me when in the building were I work with TELUS and we would have great conversations about work, life, cars, you name it, and recently his retirement. I am so sad his retirement was cut so short and I send my deepest condolences to his family.

  22. Gary, Bill, Lynn, Al, Dean
I feel like I lost a brother with Peter’s passing. We were not family by blood but we were very close with your mother being like an adopted mother to me and my mother babysitting Peter. Now he is not suffering anymore and is an eye on all of us from above.
    He will defiantly missed. Judy

  23. I worked with Peter with AGT/TELUS as recently as this past October when he retired. He always made a point to come by and have a quick chat whenever he was in the office. A kind, gentle soul and he will be missed. My condolences to you all. RIP Peter.

  24. Pete was a great collector but the best thing he collected was friendships. We will miss Pete. Love & prayers to Pete’s family friends
