January 8th, 1965 – March 9th, 2018

The family is saddened to announce the sudden passing of Bruce Harold Hudson, aged 53.   He was the son of Albert and Millie Hudson (nee Lee) and brother of Brett (Liette).   Bruce and Laura have been married for 23 years and together for 28.  Father of Samantha, Jessica, Siobhan and Emma. Grandfather of Imehjen, Ariana, Clayton, and Aurea (deceased).

Bruce was raised in Campbell River, graduating from Carihi Secondary in 1983. Bruce began his working career at Westmin Resources at Myra Falls. He later moved to the Fletcher Challenge mill in Campbell River. When offered the opportunity of an Instrumentation Mechanic Apprenticeship, he embraced it enthusiastically. This involved working at the mill and several six week stints in Vancouver while raising young children. Despite this heavy workload he achieved his Journeyman Certificate and was able to begin a new career in his chosen profession. He and his family moved to Beaumont, Alberta. He commuted to Fort McMurray, working for Spartan Controls Inc. where he spent ten very happy years.

Bruce was a true family man. He was happiest in the company of his girls.  He also loved StarWars and quirky socks, Halloween, fine scotch and the Colorado Avalanche.
He was taken too soon but lived a very full life.

  18. Wow…Harold…who knew???

Dear Laura and Family…so sad for you…sad for all of us really!

I’m mad at myself because the truth is I haven’t spoken to Bruce for a long time…years…and of few regrets that I carry…that one is way up there.

Bruce, to our Thulin St. group was not just a friend. He is family and as such, we have lost something very special, someone that will be dearly missed!

Bruce was sometimes moody…but that’s about the only baddish thing I could say about him.

What I can say is that he was/is a great friend. I’m sorry I couldn’t be in Edmonton today to pay respects and hopefully give out a few hugs…but maybe we can do something for him in CR as I think is being discussed…and I can make it to that!

What I’d like to add to all the amazing comments about Bruce is that I knew him as a friend, student, a co-worker, a co-athlete and competitor, and as a person. I saw him be a dad, a husband, a son, brother, uncle, and in all these things he was an inspiration to me!

He was generous, hardworking, and as honest as he was stubbornly determined to get it done right. He would never shirk a responsibility. He was always there on and off the field to support whoever he considered part of his team and he was always willing, with that big, beautiful, loving heart to extend the reach of “his” team. He was accepting of all until they did something to hurt his “peeps”…and then watch out…the “Bruiser” would show up.

He was proud, but not arrogant! Fun-loving and willing to be the butt-of-a-joke if it got laughs and made people smile. He would never accept being thought of as less than anyone else, but we would NEVER make someone feel bad and always tried to build people up and help if he could.

Bruce was not brought up in churches, but was always accepting of others and their faiths. It is said that Jesus did “all things well”. My friend Bruce, as far as I could see, and hopefully as much in the last 10years as he did in the first 40 that I was often a part of, did the same. I don’t know if he believed in Jesus, but I don’t know many, who day-to-day, acted more like someone who “did all things well”? Again, an inspiration!

We have/had a lot in common! Our parents set the bar high for both of us and you can’t look at what Bruce accomplished, and how he did it, without seeing the amazing job Mr.& Mrs. Hudson (Al & Millie) did. I think there must have been chauffeurs in the family tree because Al and Bruce were always driving us somewhere (soccer, basketball, summer camps, parties, school, etc.).

Bruce might not have been an A-student in highschool…but I think that was really by choice. He knew how to pick his battles and it sounds like he found his nitch in instrumentation and truly excelled there like he truly excelled at many other things in life.

I was around a lot in the 28 to 23 year portion of his time with Laura before they were married. We all worked at Westmin and Laura was like the Belle of the Ball there. Her dad was, until he retired, an executive there and as such…Laura was a little bit like a princess and “untouchable” to some degree. Another quality of Bruce’s was that he would never let “fear” stand in his way…and he found a way to win Laura over and make a life with her that was worthy of both of them. Obviously she and their girls, and Millie/Brett, will miss him the most and my heart breaks for you all.

We should be, as folks in our 50s, saying good-bye to parents, aunts/uncles, teachers and mentors…but not friends. It is too early…and in that, tragic, in this case! Bruce’s passing is also a reminder to live each day as fully as we can…to laugh…and love and make the best of the time we have. We are never promised a tomorrow. Time is in God’s hands and not ours.

Bruce, I hope you are with our dads, having a few beers and sharing some jokes. When my time comes and I get a break from cleaning horse-troughs and urinals in heaven…maybe I’ll get to join you guys and give you the hug I’ve been saving for these last 10years!

Miss you man…! See you on the flip-side…David (665 Thulin St.)

What a lovely tribute written here. We did not know Bruce but got a picture of him through this warm write up…star wars, quirky sox and scotch. Sounds like a great guy.

  22. Laura, we are so saddened to hear about Bruce. I will miss running into him around town, it was always such a nice treat to catch up with him. I hope you find some comfort in the cherished memories you hold dear. Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

  23. Sorry to hear of your sudden loss, I worked with Bruce for a few years, being one of the young group of very talented apprentices / journeymen. I “caught up” with him on several occasion on the many trips to Fort Mac. He always had a smile on his face and a great outlook on life, with his family always being #1. He will be missed by all.

  24. There are no words to express how sad this news is. I enjoyed the time we spent together at BCIT. Bruce was a very special guy.

  25. I’ve known Bruce since grade 6. His shock of red hair was the first thing I noticed moving to Thulin Street. Bruce was always the nicest warmest guy, the person that everyone liked. I’m lucky to have had dinner with him about 4 years ago, still the same great guy. I’m so very sad for this heart-breaking news. My deepest condolences to Laura and family.

  26. A tragic loss for us all. My condolences to the family. He was a fine man and will be greatly missed.

  27. I am sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Bruce. Being a co-worker and fellow commuter with Bruce has been an honour. A loss will be felt by many who have shared experience, laughter and memories with him.
