It is with deep sadness that the family of David Michael Seniw announce his sudden passing on November 2, 2020, in Edmonton at the age of 52, after a long struggle with alcohol addiction. Dave was predeceased by his beloved mother, Rose Seniw (née Harasym) on April 23, 2013. He is survived by his father, John Seniw, brother, Greg Seniw, and sister-in-law, Andrea Seniw (née Statler), as well as two uncles and many cousins.

Dave was born in Edmonton at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in 1968. He lived in Edmonton his entire life and loved the professional sports teams. Growing up, he excelled at too many organized sports to mention, not the least of which were hockey and soccer, always enthusiastically cheered on by Mom and Dad. As a child, many enjoyable hours were spent with his brother and friends playing street hockey, mini-soccer and various other sports. Dave's Dad introduced him and his brother to a wide variety of sports, including golf. Many weekends were spent with Dad at the Kinsmen Pitch & Putt as well as the Golden West Golf Course. Dave continued golfing as an adult. He loved the outdoors and its creatures and was an enthusiastic camper.

Dave was a good student and attended Kensington Elementary School just down the street from his home. From there, he went to Rosslyn Junior High School and then on to Queen Elizabeth Composite High School. Many lasting friendships began during these school years.

For the majority of his career, he worked in the utilities sector and was highly skilled in his trade. He was a conscientious worker who cared about a job well done.

Dave had a wide variety of interests and hobbies. He particularly enjoyed the two dogs he had over the years, Maverick and Reno. He knew a remarkable number of people across many years, various backgrounds, and cultures. He enjoyed learning about other cultures and their languages. Later in life, he became an avid gardener and loved to work in the yard. Dave travelled a lot with the family when he was young, and never got tired of it. He continued to travel to the States and Mexico as an adult, as often as he could. He enjoyed the company of others and was always ready to help a friend or neighbour in need. He was generous with his time and had a terrific sense of humour. Dave will surely be missed.

Regrettably, due to Covd-19 restrictions, there will only be a private gathering for immediate family at this time. We especially want to thank all who have reached out with their kind support for the family.

  1. Very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. So many laughs over the years. Dave will be greatly missed.

    • Toby:
We appreciate the sentiment! He did have a good sense of humour…quirky at times as well…a little Barney Rumble-ish.

  2. Dearest Dave. I have the fondest memories of you from high school. I’ll always remember how you checked in on me- you were gracious and caring. I’m so sorry for your family and friends as they grieve in loss. May God comfort those who mourn.

    • Jackie:
Very kind words! He did have that sense of caring and was ready to help. High school held some really good memories for him. I’m glad you two connected on a deeper level!

2 Corinthians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

  3. I’m so sorry for your loss. Dave was a great neighbour. We will surely miss our summer fires, you will truly be missed.

    • Annette and family:
I believe it was you who left the card for our family…very much appreciated.
He spoke about the times with neighbours…fires, socializing, doing projects together. Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for being kind neighbours.

  4. My deepest condolences to Dave’s family. He was a school friend of mine and i will remember him dearly for his kindness and awesome sense of humour.

    • Robin:
Our family appreciates your support. Ah, that sense of humour. We’re hearing from a lot of people who knew Dave from school (through this website, texts and phone calls). Thank you for your personal words.

  5. M condolences to the family .

    • Thank you for taking the time to leave a condolence; thank you for your support Todd.

  6. Greg and Mr. Seniw so sorry for your loss. I have a lot of great memories of Dave growing up, he was a great friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care.

    • Kevin:
It has been a while since I’ve seen you (and your brother). I remember when you and Dave drove out to Whitecourt to watch my band perform when we played a weekend there. How the time speeds by!
We do all have so many memories in common from the people and times starting in Kensington.
Thank you for your support. I’ll pass it on to Dad.

  7. I am very sad to hear of Dave’s passing. We played JR hockey together. He was a great team mate and friend.
    Dave will be missed.

    • Maury:
Thanks for condolence. Hockey…Dave loved playing hockey (on the ice, on the driveway, on the street, in the Gym), and I’m glad he made a great impression. I’m sure you had the same impact on him. I think he fondly remembered most of the team-mates he had over many years…I think he started skating at about 3 years of age. He still had one of his first pairs of skates over at his place. The care.

  8. I am so very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I attended kindergarten to grade 12 with Dave. My mom still lives in Kensington. He was always sweet and kind to me, sending my deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time.
    Heather (Mason) Ksiondzyna.

    • Heather:
Great to hear from you. Thanks for your kind comments. I remember you and your sister very well. My Dad is still at the same house in Kensington. So many from the neighbourhood have been so supportive. Dave is very fortunate to have gone through school with people like you.

  9. My heartfelt condolences to the family. I have lost touch with Dave over the years, however growing up together we always had fun at the Seniw house. Whether it was playing football after school, watching Dave practice in his rock band with his brother Greg or just hanging out. The Seniw house was a hub to hang out, and I have many fond memories of Dave growing up. Dave was an inspiring athlete and excelled at whatever he committed to doing. I am very sad to hear of his passing.

    • Justin:
Great to hear from you. Thank you for your kind words. You brought up some great memories. Indeed, a hub of sporting activity, whether it was on the lawn, the street, the driveway or the basement, we always had a good time. Life was so much simpler back then…who thought those days would end. Take care Justin.

  10. I will miss Dave he was a friend way back to high school and worked with him at ATCO. Always cheerful and a happy man. Will miss you my friend!

    • Fiona:
Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your kind words. You two knew each other through the transition from school life to real life. Reading meters for Northwestern Utilities, later ATCO, was his first serious job, working his way up into the office. If he was alive today, I’m sure he would remembered you well.

  11. As many have mentioned, Dave was a cherished and respected friend from high school, athletic circles and beyond. While we lost touch periodically over the years we were able to reconnect most recently again earlier this year. Some of my fondest life memories were my adventures with Dave. From Red Deer and Calgary road trips to Hawaii and Washington State University. In particular, I remember countless good times we spent at the Seniw home, the unique monikers we shared and our trips afield waterfowl hunting. Dave, you left us all as better people. Love you brother and my sincerest condolences to the Seniw family.

    • Ah, Jason, the travelling companion, adventurer and sportster:
You have honoured him with your words. I am so happy that you two took on so much together, enjoyed the quests and felt so welcomed at Mom and Dad’s. He has photo albums filled with pictures of those days. I hope everything is well with you and your family.

  12. Dear Greg and Mr. Seniw. We are so sorry for your loss and send hugs to all of you during this difficult time.

I have so many fond memories of Dave from playing hide and seek in the neighbourhood as little kids to being involved in hockey together for many years.

    Take care.

    • Richard, Richard, Richard, oh how many good times we could recall of Keith, Dave you and me (and many others in the immediate area). Thank you for your words and starting me on another trail of remembering.
We thank you for your hugs! I will pass them on to Dad.
I was shocked when Keith passed away in 2008 and never would of thought that I would be shocked again. I cherish the memories.
Thank you for being such a good friend to Dave.
All the best to you, your family and your Dad.

      • Barb: I neglected to acknowledge that it was you and Richard leaving the condolence. Sorry for that. Thank you two for your support!

  13. Mr. Seniw, Greg and family,
So very sorry to hear about your loss. Dave and I bumped into each other at an airport a number of years ago. We sat and chatted about the old neighborhood and friends from our past. It was a great conversation and I was struck by his friendliness. I still carry around a scar from an errant Davey high stick while playing in your backyard! Those were fun times! It is good to know he loved and was loved.
    With sympathy, Dale

    • Dale:
You’re right, Dave loved and was loved. Thank you for your sympathies and being part of the memories (you and Dean). He definitely was the friendly sort. I guess the scar is now a tangible part of the memory…
I’ll pass this on to Dad.
      Take care, Dale.

  14. Mr. Seniw, Greg and Andrea, I am so very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Dave was a caring guy who had a great sense of humor. As an example, once we got in to highschool, Dave would see me at the bus stop and would always stop, pick me up and drive me to school.
Thinking back to the days when our family would come to Mr. and Mrs. Seniw’s house for a little get together, it was always so much fun, even though, Greg, Dave, Terry and Gail would pick on me being the youngest.
Recently Dave and I had a few chats as he needed Larry’s help with his fence and he still had me laughing at the old times. I even commented on how great his yard looked – much like when his mom did all the gardening.
I hope you find comfort in the great memories you had with Dave.
    Rest peacefully Dave!

    • Lori:
It is great to hear from you and hear the good stories about Dave. Indeed, he cared, he was a sensitive sort of guy. He and I really enjoyed the times that the families got together. (I think your Dad even called Dave Jigger). I still recall some of those times even now…the Seniws and the Michaelwichs.
I’m glad you and he had contact over the years and I know he appreciated Larry’s help and opinions.
All the best for you all in the future.

  15. John, Greg and Andrea, so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing.
Our deepest sympathy and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    • Mr. and Mrs. Michaels:
It is great to hear from you two. You were a big part of our lives growing up. Thank you for your condolences. I will definitely pass this on to Dad, though I have a suspicion that you’ve already called him.
I hope you two are doing well. Take care.

  16. John we are so sorry for your loss. Dave was always so kind and friendly. Wherever we were met him, he would always take the time to say hello and visit for a while. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    • Russ and Fran:
On behalf of my Dad, thank you for your words. Indeed Dave always had time to talk and visit. People in the old neighbourhood meant a lot to him, not only his friends, but their parents as well.
I’ll pass your words along to Dad.

  17. We are deeply saddened to hear of Dave’s passing.
We have so many fond memories of watching him play hockey and soccer.
Our sincerest condolences to John, Greg and Andrea during this most difficult time.

    • Russ and Elsie:
We appreciate your empathy. We too have many good memories of those days. The neighbourhood, Kensington school and sports teams were where a lot of friendships began. Robb and Dave knew each other in many contexts, and he knew Tammy as well. We enjoyed when the families got together and appreciated your hospitality.
I’ll pass your kind words on to my Dad.
      Take good care.

  18. Very sorry to you, Andrea and Uncle Johnny regarding Dave’s passing.

    • Cindy:
Great to hear from you. Thank you for your condolences!
I remember our families getting together when we were kids. It was good to have extended family so close by in the neighbourhood.
      Take care you all.

  19. Dear Seniw family,
Our deepest condolences on Dave’s passing. I grew up going to junior high and high school with Dave, along with playing hockey with and against him for several years. Lots of fond memories having fun together. I still live in Kensington with my family, and I saw Dave occasionally. We worked together at the Kensington rinks some years ago, and connected recently a few times sharing memories. Such an unfortunate experience to go through, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Dave was a fun and caring person to know, and will always be remembered.

    • Dean and family:
Thank you for your words and memories and thank you for your prayers. I’m glad that you two would connect every once in a while. Meeting up with people he knew from the school and hockey years were very meaningful to him.
All the best to you and your family.

  20. My deepest condolences Mr. Seniw, Greg & family. I went to elementary, junior high and high school with Dave and have so many wonderful memories of growing up in Kensington. When the world feels a little crazy at times, the memories of the community in which we grew up in, and the friends we shared sports, birthdays and laughs with in that neighbourhood often bring a sense of peace, joy, and normalcy.
Rest In Peace Dave, you’ll forever have a special place in our hearts.

    • Tammy:
Thank you for reaching out with kind words and remembering great memories. The ‘growing up’ years really do hold a lot. Dave really held those things tightly, and it looks like you do the same. Thank you for being a part of his life.
All the best to you and to your future…and with Christmas less than a month away, comfort, peace and joy to you.

  21. Greg & John,

I am sorry Dave was taken too early from this world. As many have stated, I too have fond memories of playing hockey with Dave at the Kensington rinks, where John did an amazing job on the ice! On behalf of the Acton family, I offer our most sincere condolences on your loss.

    • Kelly and Family:
We appreciate your words and memories! The rinks sure hold a lot of memories for a lot of people; hockey brought many together…of all ages. It’s good to see you two had good times there. I remember you and Jody and half the neighbourhood being there at one time or another. (I’ll pass your comments on to my dad).
Take care Actons. May the Spirit of Christmas truly be your’s.

  22. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. Had many laughs with him at queen elizabeth.
Bumped into him getting groceries in spring and continued to laugh about the good old day.
My deepest sympathy to his family

    • Warren:
Thank you for your condolences. He knew so many people from all grades over at Queen E. It’s great to hear that there were memories made there that lasted. When our family would get together, there was always talk about the many people Dave bumped into along the way.
Take care as you continue along the way.

  23. I just learned of Dave’s sudden passing. Dave and I came up together playing hockey, all the way through Major Midget. He was a gifted athlete and a great teammate. I especially remember his distinctive giggle that set everyone else off laughing hysterically. My deepest condolences go out to his family, particularly John, without whom us rink rats would have had no ice to enjoy.

    • Leighton:
We appreciate your words and your memories. It was quite the community. I know Dave enjoyed time spent with those he knew…I miss his crazy laugh too!
      Take care all you Untereiners!
