March 5, 1935 - March 20, 2018

It is with great sadness we announce Don’s unexpected passing on March 20, 2018, at the age of 83. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Wally (Linnemann, nee Hennig). Don was predeceased by his first wife, Liz (nee Milligan), in 2009 and is survived by children Laurie (Bruce), Jim (Lynnette), Jody (Rick), David (Kathy); and grandchildren Quinn and Skye; Aidan (with partner Josefin) and Liam; Geoff, Kelly and Jamie; and Emily and Alice. He will be dearly missed by Wally’s daughters Leane (Randy), Angela and Anita; grandchildren Jennifer, Amanda, Sarah, Simon, Aaron, Stephanie, David, and Ashley; and great grandsons Alexander, William, and Atticus. Don was also predeceased by his parents, Marjorie and Dr. John Macgregor, and sisters Jane and Marnie. Don (“Grandy”) leaves behind many family members and dear friends, including Bud and Margo Pals and Frank Graves.

A native of Edmonton, Don was an alumnus of the University of Alberta (BA, 1956). After graduate studies, he served for many years in hospital administration, starting at the Misericordia Hospital in 1967 and retiring from the AHA in 1991. Don lived his life to the fullest and had a great sense of humour. A disciplined man with tremendous will power, he worked hard to maintain his fitness. He played countless pick-up basketball games, competed in the 2005 World Masters Games, and his love for basketball lives on in successive generations. He also pitched for his seniors slow pitch team until age 81. There were many camping trips to Mara Lake as the family grew up. Don was an avid reader and keen observer of politics, the weather and birdfeeders. He enjoyed music and the arts, and was a mentor to many. A bountiful garden and freshly mown lawn greeted all visitors to the ‘Croft’. For the past seven years Don and Wally travelled the world. He loved and was so very proud of his families.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held on March 28, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 11223 - 51 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. Memorial donations gratefully accepted to the Edmonton Public Library Children’s Literacy Fund, the Alberta Baroque Music Society, the Red Cross, or the Canadian Mental Health Association (Distress Line). Microloans through Kiva.org also appreciated.

  1. Our thoughts have been with wally and all the Family this week. We are saddened by Don’s unexpected death. He truly lived his life to the fullest and was loved and respected by all who knew him. Although we are unable to meet with the family at the Celebration service, our thoughts will be with you. Our happy memories of Don will remain with us and our sadness of his passing will fade.

  2. Please accept our deepest condolences on Don’s passing. We have known Don a relatively short 7 years but I will always remember the humorous and fruitful discussions when ever we got together. We are going to miss you Don.

  3. Dear David & Family; So very sorry for the loss of your Dad, you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Sending you my love. Remember the good times and he will always be in your heart.

  4. I am going to miss don greatly. He made my grandmother Wally so happy. I’ll miss our Thursday dinners together and being his hockey “ringer” as he always called me, even though I always told him there’s better people to get his nhl info from. We’d cover everything from sports to Netflix, politics. No topic was off the table. But most of all I will miss the smile on his face every time he got to see and hold Atticus; he held him one last time on the Thursday before his passing. He was just so happy. I’ll miss you Don and you’ll always be in our thoughts and heart.

  5. I was saddened when I read the news of Don’s passing. We were close friends during our high school and university days but like many situations we lost contact thereafter.

Our birthdays were 3 days apart and we often kidded each other about that. He was 3 days older than me. I respected him as a “senior”.

The purpose of this letter is to offer my condolences on his passing. He was truly a gentlemen and a man of integrity and loved life in so many ways. He will be missed by all and in particular his family.

    May he rest in peace.

  6. My sincere and heartfelt condolences on your Father’s passing. Cherish your memories

  7. David, Kathy, Emily, and Sarah, and other members of your family, please accept our sincere condolences on your loss. Our thoughts are with you. May you find comfort in your happy memories. Mary and Fred.

  8. To all the family of beloved Don. I was the teen baby sister and friend/ neighbour to the MacGregors whilst we shared our lives in Parkview district, Edmonton. A few years past! The good old days.

I loved to be part of the clan, overviewing the four kids as Liz and Don had their adult time, out and about Edmonton associations an evening a week.

Discussions ensued at great lengths when the parents returned from their outings. Many topics discussed. In detail and with very respected opinions.

Don was a family friend as well to my dear mom and my three brothers.

The Tucker’s will always hold love in their hearts for Don.

Condolences to the family and extended families.

    Karen Tucker / Vancouver
