January 8, 1952-January 23, 2019

We are saddened to announce our sister's sudden passing on January 23, 2019. Liz passed away peacefully in her sleep following routine surgery. She was predeceased by her parents, Audrey and Jack, and her nephew, Miles. She is survived by her siblings Marsha (Murray), Michael (Nadira), David (Lynda), Kathy (Mark), Barb (Mary Jane) and Richard (Heather).

Liz was a favorite aunt to her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and a beloved adoptive aunt to all of her friends' children. It is a comfort to know that she will be fondly remembered by so many in the years to come.

After a 35-year teaching career, Liz retired in 2011. She stayed in touch with many of her former students and colleagues, and often shared amusing anecdotes of her time as a teacher. Her family and friends can attest to Liz's kind heart, generous spirit and wonderful sense of humor.

A memorial service for Liz will be held on Sunday, February 10 at 1 p.m. at St. Basil Cultural Centre (10819-71 Ave)

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Liz's honor to Youth Emergency Shelter Society or Project Adult Literacy Society

  1. I offer my prayers, thoughts and condolences to Liz’s brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Growing up as a close teenage friend of Liz’s youngest brother, I have extremely fond memories of visiting at the Knoll household and being subject to Liz’s dry wit and subtle tolerance of our teenage opinions, outlooks and plans shared in the family kitchen so long ago. Although we were left with no doubt as to Liz’s opinions on our views, we always escaped with our dignity and self-esteem intact (Liz’s doing, not ours). I imagine that each of Liz’s students over 35 years were blessed with a similar experience. I am grateful for the brief time that I knew Liz and her subtle but significant impact on me at a very impressionable period of my life. I pray that we all take a moment to celebrate hers.

  2. I’m so sorry to read of Liz’s passing. She was a wonderful person with a great sense of humor. She was also very generous with her time and help. She mentored me when I first started teaching at St Basil’s school in the early 1980s and helped me so much those first couple of years with great strategies and suggestions. She was a good friend and teacher. I also remembering laughing a lot with her, her sense of humour helped when times were challenging. My condolences to her family.

  3. I had the privilege of working with Liz 50 years ago at the Edmonton Children’s Centre. Even today I recall all the mischief she would get up to and all the joy kids and adults alike experienced as a result!! She was an amazing story teller and a truly kind person.

  4. Liz wa my best friend for decades ! I will miss her for the rest of my life.
