With hearts full of love and gratitude, we announce that David Kwok Wing Wong was called home to the Lord suddenly on September 24, 2026, in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 89.

David was born in Hong Kong, the seventh of eleven children. His early years were marked by hardship: during the wartime occupation of Hong Kong, his family lost two of his older siblings. Those years gave him a lasting gratitude for the simple things in life.

In 1966, David married the love of his life, Mabel Lin, at St. Teresa's Church in Hong Kong. Their marriage, blessed in the Catholic faith, lasted 57 years, until Mabel's passing on April 7, 2023. We take comfort in knowing they are together again in the presence of the Lord.

Above all, David loved God. His life of service began as a teenager in the Legion of Mary, visiting families and the sick. From the 1980s until he left Hong Kong, he was an active member of the St. Joseph's Society at Notre Dame Parish in Ma Tau Wai, Kowloon. He took that commitment to heart. Inspired by St. Joseph's virtues of silent dedication, humility and hard work, David served mostly behind the scenes: assisting at Mass, ushering, looking after parish logistics and maintenance, and helping with charity work in the community. He never sought recognition. He simply showed up, quietly and faithfully, wherever he was needed.

His devotion also led him on pilgrimage: to St. Joseph's Oratory and Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, to Medjugorje, to Lourdes, and to St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. These journeys of prayer were among the great joys of his life.

As a husband and father, David gave everything he had. In Hong Kong he worked long hours as a postman, a taxi driver and a convenience store owner to support his family of six, and he made sure that everyone at the table was well fed before he thought of himself. Yet no matter how hard the week had been, Sunday belonged to God and to his family: Mass together in the morning, then an afternoon at the swimming pool or the park. He was the same with everyone. When someone called for help, even in the middle of the night, David went, often giving up his own meal or his own rest to do so.

In 2001, David and Mabel made a new home in Canada, living in Toronto for nearly twenty years before moving to Edmonton in 2020 to be close to family. He remained a faithful parishioner, worshipping at Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church in Toronto, and later at Mary Help of Christians Chinese Catholic Church and St. Thomas More Parish in Edmonton.

David lived simply and wanted little. His pleasures were small ones: fresh bread, yogurt, something sweet, and Chinese dried fruits. Even as his memory faded in his later years, he still loved to sing the Catholic hymns he had known all his life, and he was happiest in the company of his daughter Teresa and his grandchildren.

David will be lovingly remembered by his children, Maria, Teresa, Augustine (Stella) and John (Candy); his five grandchildren, Nathania, Antonia, Bennett, Rosalia and Carol; and his three surviving siblings. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mabel; his parents; and seven of his brothers and sisters.
