Daniel John Matheson
Daniel John Matheson, 69, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of those whose lives he touched so deeply.
Dan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 18, 1956. He loved life fully and fearlessly, never afraid to take risks or follow his own path. At 19, he moved west with his best and lifelong friends, Tony and Mark. Though he briefly attended university, Dan quickly realized his future would be built through hard work, determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit. With a background in pharmaceutical and industrial solvent sales, he founded DM Supplies and later had the joy of bringing his sons, Kevin John Matheson and Timothy Ross Matheson into the business.
Dan will be remembered for his adventurous spirit and the many passions that brought him joy, including touring on his Harley Davidsons (yes, more than one), fishing, camping, and later travelling abroad. He embraced the open road, the outdoors, and every opportunity to make lasting memories with the people he loved.
Above all, Dan loved unconditionally, with loyalty, strength, and generosity. His family was profoundly blessed to share in his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Angela; his children, Timothy and wife Jessica, and Kevin and wife Daniela; his precious grandchildren, Jackson and Julianna Rose; his father, Joel, and wife Judy; his sister, Diana; and his brother, Timothy.
Dan is predeceased by his first wife Patricia Lynn Shirlaw, loving mother to his children; and by his loving mother, Meriam Ruth Matheson (née McRoberts), whose battle with ATTR Amyloidosis helped lead to Dan’s own diagnosis. With courage and selflessness, Dan supported research toward a cure for this hereditary disease by participating in drug trials for the benefit of his family and others facing the same diagnosis. His family is deeply grateful to him, and to the pharmaceutical companies whose innovations gave Dan more years of life he loved so well.
We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the excellent team of doctors who cared for Dan with compassion, humour, and dedication over the last decade. A special thank you to Dr. Glen Keyes, Dan’s general practitioner, whose care was instrumental in Dan’s diagnosis. We are also grateful to Dr. Leslie Kasza, Dan’s cardiologist, who supported Dan and our immediate family with kindness, humour, and a clear, honest delivery of the facts. Finally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Noel Fine, who led the trials in which Dan participated and helped provide access to new treatments that prolonged Dan’s life.

We were saddened to learn of Dan’s passing. Dan was more than a friend to our family. He was my brother in law and my partner when we worked together in the pharmaceutical industry. Dan and I put on a lot of fun miles together. We were privileged to have Dan as part of our lives for so many years. Rest easy brother, til we meet again..

Although I did not have the privilege of knowing Dan personally, through Tim I have come to understand the love, respect, and deep bond your family shares. My heart goes out to all of you as you celebrate Dan’s life and grieve your loss.

So very sorry to hear of Dans passing. My sincere condolences to his entire family. I didn’t ever work with Dan but was a friend from the gym many years ago . He was always a caring , jovial, fun guy and a joy to work out with. His journey with his illness was a difficult one and hopefully he is now at peace. He will be missed .
I was so sorry to hear about Dan’s passing. Dear Angie, you and your family have been on my heart. We shared 15 + years of friendship, and even though life and distance pulled us apart this past year, I’ve thought of you often — I’ve been following Dan’s strength from afar and thinking of you both. I am far away right now, but please know I’m holding you close in my thoughts.
I’ve lost my brother recently too, and I know a little of how heavy this is. I’ve cherished our 15 years of friendship, and even in the quiet this past year, you’ve been in my thoughts and all the memories together mean so much to me. I am far away, but I am with you in spirit.

Having grown up with Dan in Halifax, I was sorry to hear this news. I spent many good times at the Matheson house in Wedgewood and remember fondly the great outdoor adventures we all had growing up there. I was fortunate to reconnect with him a few years ago when he was back in Halifax for a visit. He certainly lived life to the fullest and I know there are many cherished memories that will continue to support all the family.

So sorry to hear of Dans passing. I met him thru mutual friends at my Work Sorrentinos. We would all meet for wine and drinks across the street. We had many laughs and became friends over the years. He was always smiling and joking , a very kind friendly gentleman. A Beautiful soul. May he RIP. Sending you my condolences.
I extend my sincere condolences to everyone in The Matheson Family! I am very sad to hear of Dan’s passing. Dan and Tim have been my friends for over 55 years. I was one of their first Judo coaches. Joel is a fraternity brother. Dan and Tim were successful Judo competitors and were credits for our Halifax YMCA team, our Halifax West High School, and our shared neighbourhoods.
I have fond memories of Dan driving Joel’s Pontiac on The Bicentennial Highway, showing me what “she could do”.

Loosing a partner, I am experiencing it as well, is a difficult thing to live through, but I hope you will be able to leave the sad experiences behind and carry the happy ones forward and that will give you some solace.

Always making everyone he encountered feel known even if it was just for the moment or later on after many years. I only me Dan a couple of times through the gallery and I was always impressed with his generous spirit, optimism and love for the arts, and for the creatives who he worked and connected with.

Thank you for virtually sharing the beautiful, thoughtful service in memory of Dan. It was very moving to witness the love and respect expressed in honour of Dan’s very full life. Thank you Tim and Kevin for your eloquence. And to dear Joel for his grace. Dan was such a spirit and big hearted man. While we didn’t share a lot of our adult lives — growing up with my Matheson cousins was full of joy, good pranks, and a deep sense of familial connection. Dan led the way as the oldest cousin. The last time I saw Dan — we instantly reconnected and he was so honest and forthright in his fight of the disease. He was so full of the life force — the energy to face it fully and yet — love all those around him. He spoke so proudly of his sons, and their families; his gorgeous home with Angie, and his dog, the art gallery and his business…. I could see so much of my Uncle Joel in Dan — that spark that was contagious. A passion to seize the big moments and the small moments equally.
