It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Henry Osborn at the age of 91.

He is survived by his wife, Lucie, his sons Gerald, Dan (Nancy), Al (Kellee), step-daughter Yvonne Prinz (Dave), family member Don Marusak, grandchildren Kelsie, Brady, Cody, Erin, Nile, Danika, Brendan, and younger sister Patricia Osborn.

George was born in Winnipeg to parents Margaret Nelson Osborn and Sergeant Major John Robert Osborn, recipient of a posthumous Victoria Cross awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

In his early years, George was a freckle-faced redhead who was sometimes mistaken for a young Mickey Rooney. During a few boyhood scuffles and sporting mishaps, George broke his nose on several occasions.

George relocated to Edmonton in the early 1950s. Over the years he was employed by numerous organizations (usually in Sales). Western Grocers, Scott Paper, Molson, Westrade Sales, Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission. Many of his summers were spent working with Edmonton Klondike Casino. He also enjoyed bartending at various events always happy to provide a sympathetic ear for the patrons.

In his downtime, George coached youth hockey for Gold Bar Community League.

Wherever he went, George took great pride in knowing just about everybody. In the grocery store, in the drug store, in the liquor store and if he didn’t know you, he got to know you ASAP.

Nowadays scientists agree that the concept of the fiery-tempered redhead is just a myth. Alas, nobody told George. He could (and often did) bellow with the best of them but when he was done, he was done.

George and Lucie met in the early 80s and they married in 1988.

As step-daughter Yvonne sees it: “George was a kind and gregarious guy who always had a smile on his face. He loved watching sports, especially those involving a ball or a puck, and enjoyed a good Rye Whisky. George shared many laughs with Lucie over the years and remained optimistic until the very end.”

In his 91 years, George touched so many lives. He will be greatly missed but cherished in memory.
