Warren Barry Bittorf

On Friday, August 28th, 2026, Warren Barry Bittorf of Edmonton passed away at the age of 78 at the University of Alberta Hospital. He is survived by wife Jane, sons Kevin (Louise) Steven, Darren (Dawn), granddaughter Emma, brother Robin (Sharon), and several nieces. Predeceased by brother Ean and wife Betty.

Warren was a man of many talents and abilities, which is reflected in his diverse work history.
His most favourite job was working as a tour guide at the Columbia Ice Fields in Jasper National Park. His most proud achievement was graduating with his Bachelor of Social Work Degree from the University of Calgary. Warren’s final job positions were with the Workers’ Compensation Board. He started on helping injured workers transition to new employment after an injury. He then moved into case management and completed his employment in special projects.

Warren was a natural leader and organizer. He loved bringing people together to complete a task, a project or a fun family activity. For example, he volunteered for three summers to be the director of a summer church camp at Sylvan Lake. He found the volunteers, set up a training weekend and ran the week-long camp. He was affectionately known as “Papa Smurf”. During his time with Alberta Gas Ethylene, he was the captain of their accident response first aide team who won first place in every competition they entered. For family gatherings he usually organized a pool tournament and of course he had to have prizes or trophies for everyone. He never wanted to leave anyone out.

Warren was known as “Mr. Fix-It” to family and friends. He loved music and especially cherished playing his 12-string guitar. Although his first instrument was the 4-string banjo, he knew it was the guitar he wanted to play. His other interests included carpentry, camping, golfing, oil painting and pool.
During his long struggle managing his many chronic disease conditions, Warren never complained and was always an optimist. He viewed any limits he faced as an opportunity to try harder.
During his many hospitalizations patients and staff always commented on his grateful attitude and great sense of humour. He will be greatly missed as his big heart and big personality took up a great deal of space in our hearts and in our lives.
Rest in peace Warren, in knowing you were a loving husband, father, and brother; devoted friend and overall nice guy to everyone you met.

For those who knew Warren and want to express their condolences, there will be an informal gathering of family and friends.
