José Manuel Hernández (Carrión)
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of José Manuel Hernandez, affectionately known to many as "El Tomate," on June 4, 2025 at the age of 78 in Edmonton, Alberta.
Born on May 12, 1947, in Longavi, Chile, José Manuel embodied incredible strength and courage, forging a new life for his family in Canada after arriving as a political refugee in 1980. His journey in this life was a testament to his enduring spirit and unwavering hope.
His beloved wife and compañera of 55 years, Juana Adriana, survives him. Their profound bond, forged in their youth as friends in Linares, Chile, blossomed into a truly remarkable and unwavering commitment. Even after their exile from their homeland and the immense challenges of starting fresh in a new country with a new language and two small children, they made Canada their home, extending their circle to include friends who became family. Their enduring love story, through it all, stands as a beautiful example of devotion.
José Manuel was the loving father of Angela (Ken) and Cristian (Amy), and a truly adored grandfather to Javier and Elena. He poured his heart into his family, and his legacy of love and resilience will continue to live on through them. As the eldest of twelve siblings, he was a guiding presence and leaves behind a large, loving family of brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews who will deeply miss his laughter and warmth.
"El Tomate" had a rare gift for connecting with people. He could walk into any room and effortlessly make friends, his infectious laughter and kind spirit instantly putting everyone at ease. His passion for soccer was legendary; it wasn't just a game to him, but a bond he lovingly shared with his son and grandson, creating countless cherished memories on and off the field. He found immense peace and joy tending his garden, a reflection of his nurturing spirit. Beyond his personal interests, Jose Manuel was also a fierce advocate for social justice, a cause he championed with conviction throughout his life, always standing up for what was right. He was a tough man when he needed to be, yet his kindness and compassion shone through, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met.
He is greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace Tata.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends.
