James Hodgkinson
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Hodgkinson, who left this world surrounded by his family on Tuesday December 23, 2025, at 77 years old.
James was born on April 21, 1948, in Stoke-on-Trent, England. He is predeceased by his parents, James and Harriet Hodgkinson, and is survived by his loving wife Roseann, three children Tanith (Scott), James (Anne) and Lisa (Blaine) and five grandchildren; Anastasia, Bronwyn, Mason, Katherine and Esme.
James came to Canada in 1968 and completed a Master of Science in chemistry at the University of Alberta. For decades he dedicated his career to the field of instrumentation technology as a Senior Associate Chemist at Syncrude and later shaped the next generation as an instrumentation instructor at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. He wrote technical manuals for the apprenticeship program before fully retiring in 2013.
James had a gentle kindness and was known for his desire to help people, donating his time as a mental health volunteer in crisis intervention. He was a musician and played bass, guitar, and percussion including various drums and orchestral bells, all of which were self-taught. Later in his life he discovered a talent for visual art and self-published an instruction book teaching others to draw and paint titled Pen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. His artwork is proudly displayed by his friends and family in Canada, Australia, and the United States. He had strong philosophies about life and was an integral part of a community where he generously worked for the benefit of others.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Trinity Funeral Home in Edmonton. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. James supported several different charities that were close to his heart, and in lieu of flowers his family asks that donations be made to any charity of choice in his memory.
James’ departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. We will remember his legacy of kindness, humour and love.
