Alcide Allarie
With fond memories and sad hearts, we mourn the loss of our Dad, Alcide Valerien Allarie. Alcide, known as Sid to his friends and family, passed away peacefully Sept 15, 2025 at his home, Benevolence Care Centre, in Edmonton.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Esther, infant granddaughter Mikayla, his parents Arthur and Maria, and his 10 brothers. He is survived by his only sister, Therese.
He is lovingly remembered by his four children: Norman (Virginia) Allarie, Gail (Randy) Latawiec, Denise McKechnie (Bruce) and Michelle (Dan) Monroe; grandchildren: Nicole, Ryan, Kale, Karmyn, and Mariah; and great grandchildren: Sydney, Kiera, and Layne.
Sid was born in Jarvie, Alberta on Aug 23, 1934 to a large family who ran Jarvie General Store. He was the 10th of 12 children. Sid lost his mother at a young age, and went to school at Notre Dame Convent in Morinville. He attended St. John’s College in Edmonton, and then went to Jarvie High School. After leaving school, Sid worked various survey crew jobs building bridges and towers in Alberta and the North West Territories.
Sid and Esther knew each other at Jarvie High school and Community dances in the Dapp and Jarvie area brought them together. Sid married the love of his life, Esther and moved to west Edmonton. There, Sid started his job at Canada Post, where he worked outside in rain, wind, snow or sun until retirement. Sid also had a second job driving a Barrel Taxi for a period of time. He never complained, working diligently to ensure his family could have all the opportunities he could give them.
Sid and Esther settled in Glenwood neighborhood in Edmonton with their 4 children, where they spent the rest of their lives, living in the family home across from a park. Sid was a good husband and a wonderful father. He was a kind and gentle-hearted man who smiled and laughed easily. Our family enjoyed many trips throughout Alberta and BC, camping and exploring nature. Most of the summer was spent at Jarvie Rod and Gun Club. Every weekend the family would pile into the non-air-conditioned Chevy and drive the hour to the lake, jumping straight into the cool water upon arrival. He loved hunting and fishing and took great pride in his yard.
Sid showed his love to his family in many ways. When Esther worked as a caregiver at the facility across the park, Sid went out there every snowfall in winter to snow-blow her a path home through the park, saving her a knee-high trek through snow. Such acts of kindness and devotion defined Sid as a loving husband and father. Sid’s love for Esther transcended all bounds, and even in her later years when she developed Alzheimer’s he always treated her with the same love and care, regarding her as his best friend until the very end.
In his later years Sid was an avid crib player, besting his opponents more often than not. He also loved spending time with his two favourite family dogs, Ruby and Mia. He could often be seen taking a walk with Ruby in the basket of his walker, or cuddling Mia in bed and feeding her cheese. Sid’s life never stopped involving adventures with his family, who visited often, never without a tasty snack! He loved to birdwatch at the park, go for a drive in the country or just have a friendly visit to chat.
Sid was much loved and will be dearly missed.
Internment and a small gathering of immediate family to be held at Jarvie Catholic Cemetery.
