Alfred (Fred) Rusterholz
Fred Rusterholz passed away in Edmonton on July 17, 2025, at age 95, following complications from a stroke. Though the last weeks were difficult, Fred’s quiet strength, kindness, and readiness to help others defined his life from beginning to end.
Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Fred trained as a mechanic before moving to Canada at 21 for a job in Westlock, Alberta. Initially planning to continue on to Brazil, he changed course after meeting Mary Cherniwchan at a dance in Edmonton. They married in August 1954 and built a home and life together. Their family included David (born 1958), Maria and Richard, both adopted in 1962.
Fred was a skilled tradesman who opened Turicum Auto Electric in 1963, focusing on vehicle electrical repairs and tune-ups. His brother-in-law, Aldo Pezzani, joined the business in 1968. Over the years, Fred developed close bonds with the entire Cherniwchan family.
He enjoyed many hobbies: fishing year-round with family trips to Lac La Biche, marksmanship with trophies from the Swiss Rifle Club, and artistic carving and jewelry-making. An avid gardener, he generously shared produce and advice with neighbours, who supported him in return in later years.
Although hearing loss kept Fred from church activities in later years, his Christian faith remained central to his values. Earlier, he and Mary had supported community groups like Fun Seekers, assisting youth with developmental challenges. Fred lived with quiet integrity — always ready to lend a hand.
In 2024, Fred moved into Rosedale Assisted Living. Despite vision and hearing challenges, he stayed socially engaged and made new friends. He loved to tell jokes and share stories, always ready with a bit of humor. He continued his daily visits to see Mary in continuing care at the Edmonton General, walking there with his walker until his stroke on May 28 — a clear expression of love and devotion that never faded.
Fred was predeceased by his parents Kaspar and Klara; brothers Max and Hugo; sister Alice; and granddaughter Marilyn. He is survived by wife Mary; brother Albert (Erika); sons David and Richard (Loretta); daughter Maria, with whom the family has lost contact; grandson Aaron (Katie); and great-grandchildren Nash, Banks, and Aria.
Fred requested a simple cremation and wished his ashes scattered on Crown land he and Mary often visited. He chose not to have a memorial service, preferring to be remembered quietly.
Fred will be remembered as a loving husband, a caring father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a neighbour always willing to help. His steady kindness made a difference to many.
Baptized Lutheran and for many years a member of Grace United Church, Fred’s faith was shown in the way he lived — humble, compassionate, and service-oriented.
May he rest in peace, remembered warmly by those who knew him.
