David was born on July 17, 1945 in Lethbridge, Alberta. He was predeceased by his parents, Don and Mary Nattress. He is remembered by family members brother Randy (Pam), sister Laurelie (Claire), nephew Jeff (Kara), niece Carla Grant (Brent), grand nieces Ella, Emily, Eryn, and grand nephews Jackson and Jet, as well as cousins, friends, and hundreds of former students.

David lived in Lethbridge until 1958. He began piano studies there and developed his love of drama, particularly movies. He kept a large box of newspaper clippings advertising movies that were playing at his favourite spots, the movie theatres in downtown Lethbridge. In 1958, the family moved to Milk River, Alberta. David continued studying piano and kept track of the movies shown at the Sunland theatre. He excelled in school and was involved with Boy Scouts Canada and the school band program.

After graduating high school, David moved to Edmonton, Alberta, to pursue a degree in Education. He knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a teacher. While at the University of Alberta, he participated in the U of A Mixed Chorus as a talented bass, and regularly met with a small group of friends for Bible study. David excelled in all his many endeavours.

After graduation in 1963, David taught for two years at Erie Rivers High School in Milk River, and then for 18 years at Strathcona High School in Edmonton. He primarily taught Social Studies but found his true passion teaching Drama. During a two-year sabbatical in Toronto, Ontario, he studied computer skills and substituted at a girls' school. In 1983, David returned to Edmonton to teach at M. E. LaZerte High School where he remained until retiring in 2000. It was here that he honed his drama teaching skills and developed a full-time program. While teaching fulltime, David earned a Master of Education degree from the U of A. Over his entire career, David directed and produced over a hundred plays. The students involved enjoyed having the drama room as a place to call home while at school. David often referred to his students as the stars in his crown. After a 33-year teaching career, David had a star-studded crown, filled with the gems of hundreds of students.

After retirement, David enjoyed going to plays, movies, concerts, and spending time with friends. He was an avid reader and had a collection of hundreds of books, as well as CDs covering a wide range of genres. Even more impressive was his collection of VHS tapes and DVDs - nearly 2000! David loved all things dramatic.

David passed away peacefully with family at his bedside September 30. In memory of him, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada or a charity of your choice. David was a generous donor to many organizations. No services are planned. In lieu, sit back and relax with your favourite movie.
