Jeannie Chua Beng Gin
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jeannie Chua Beng Gin - beloved wife, mother, Nai Nai, sister, cousin and friend - on September 22, 2025 at the age of 60. Jeannie was buried at Rosehill Cemetery on September 26, 2025.
She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Ming/Jasper; her children Timothy (Kaytlin), Jeremy (Maki), and Tiffany; her grandchildren Tessa, Gemma, and Max; many siblings, siblings-in-law, her father-in-law, cousins, nephews, nieces, and great-nephews; and her cats Electrikitty and Kiara.
Jeannie was born in Singapore on November 10, 1964 to Chua Huat Kay and Lim Swee Kiow, the youngest of seven children. She had a love of language and graduated from the National University of Singapore with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Linguistics. She put her skills to good use by obliterating her friends and family at word games such as Words with Friends and, in less advanced times, Scrabble.
Jeannie spent most of her life working as a writer/editor and was a stay-at-home mom to her three kids for a few years.
Jeannie met her husband Ming while they were working together at an engineering firm in Singapore. She shot some rubber bands at him and he instantly fell in love. They were married in 1989.
Jeannie had a strong faith in God, and when God told her that she would have three children, she believed Him. God first told her that the names of her children would be Timothy and Tiffany, then she was later given the name Jeremy. When she gave birth to twin boys, she was at first confused, but then realized that God intended for her to name the older Timothy and the younger Jeremy. When she gave birth to a little girl two and a half years later, she knew to name her Tiffany. In 2002, Ming and Jeannie made a decision to move to Canada. They lived in Vancouver, BC for two years before moving to Edmonton, Alberta.
She is remembered for her lovely quirks, such as giving people thoughtful gifts, creating witty Facebook posts, loving traditional hymns, planning elaborate parties with exciting party games such as “Guess the Twin” (always with a surprise Tiffy picture in there) and fun lucky draws, and spoiling both her grandchildren and her cats.
Jeannie continued to be the loving person she is despite being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2024. We were very fortunate to make many fond memories with her during the last year and half in between treatments. During her last year and a half, she continued to focus on others rather than herself through acts such as continuing to give thoughtful gifts, reaching out to friends and family she felt needed support and love, avoiding burdening people with the knowledge of her illness, and not wanting others to feel left out at her funeral (see more below).
We would like to express our gratitude to the staff at the Cross Cancer Institute, the Alberta Health Services and Bayshore HealthCare home care nurses, and the Save On Foods Pharmacy (especially Larry) for their care. We are also extremely grateful for the care and kindness provided by the staff at the Unit 43 Palliative Care Unit at the Grey Nuns hospital in her last days.
Jeannie had friends and family across Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom, and other places. It was her wish not to have a funeral service because she did not want to leave anyone out. Instead, she requested for a memorial page to be created in her honour. We would appreciate any stories, photographs, or memories of Jeannie to be shared on her memorial website at https://everloved.com/life-of/jeannie-chua/.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grey Nuns Community Hospital through the Covenant Foundation (https://covenantfoundation.akaraisin.com/ui/GNCH/donations/start) in memory of Jeannie.
