Rowena May Yanish

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Rowena May Yanish at the age of 93 on December 6, 2025.

Rowena is lovingly remembered by her sons Steve (Tami) and David (Shelley), daughter Christine, grandchildren (Tyler, Shane, Deanna, and Eric), several great grandchildren, sister Margaret, and brothers Roland (Diane) and Steven (Arlene); as well, Rowena has many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Walter, son Walter Jr. (Wally), parents (Roland and Elsie), mother in-law (Stella), four siblings (Katherine, Tom, Betty, and Elsie), and many other relatives.

Rowena was born in Buckans, Newfoundland and, in her youth, lived primarily in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. While on a visit to Toronto, she met her future husband, Walter. He obtained employment with the Canadian National Railroad and eventually the family settled in Edmonton.

Rowena was a homemaker who also worked part-time as a cosmetician. She always took pride in her appearance and liked helping others enhance their own beauty. Rowena was an avid knitter who did beautiful work. She had a great sense of humour who sure enjoyed a joke or two. Moreover, she loved sharing stories about Newfoundland and never forgot her birthplace.

Rowena spent the last few years of her life at the Dickensfield Extended Care Hospital and we wish to thank the staff who were always compassionate and supportive of her care.
