Walter Hawco passed away peacefully on May 23, 2022, at the age of 81.  Walter was predeceased by his loving wife, Joan.  He is survived by his two daughters Darlene Hawco (Vern) and DeAnne McKenna (Ian), grandchildren Robin Fayad (Ahmed), Rhylie and Rhyder McKenna, great granddaughter Rukaya Fayad as well as his brothers, sisters and extended family in eastern Canada.

Walter was born on August 31st, 1940, in Bell Island, Newfoundland.  He moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he met and married Joan Hawco in 1967.  They enjoyed a beautiful marriage of 49 years together.  He was a hard-working Roofer, achieving his Red Seal Journeyman ticket from NAIT.  Walter enjoyed spending time with his many friends over the years.  He enjoyed spending a lot of his time at his Floating Stone Lake lot fishing, enjoying campfires and being outdoors.  He liked socializing with his friends and family in his garage playing darts, watching sports and having the occasional, or many, Pilsners with everyone.

Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to his family and a caring friend to all that knew him.  To honor Walter’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.  We invite everyone who knew Walter to celebrate his life by keeping your memories of him in your thoughts and hearts.

  1. Rest in peace my brother. Always in my heart ❤️.

  2. My condolences and prayers to the Hawco family on the passing of their brother Walter, may he rest in peace. I never knew Walter but I know the rest of the family, you are all in my thoughts at this difficult time, Fly with the Angels Walter.

  3. My sincerest condolences to cousin Walter’s family, extended family and friends.
    Rest In Peace, Cousin.

  4. Please accept my condolences regarding Walter’s passing. I have many fond memories of our activities together:of his telling me about his strict Catholic upbringing in Newfoundland and of his work as a roofer here in Alberta. For many years after Walter’s retirement he, Reg Ulmer and I went out to Pax Natura Ranch to cut the grass and do general repairs and maintenance. May God comfort you with the promise of our Lord Jesus in John 11:25-26: “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

  5. Ken Mccrimmon best friend of Walter sends his prayers and condolences to his family. Ken knew Walter most of his life and thought of him like a father. Through good times and bad they had each other. Ken will miss his friend very much.

  6. I was Walter and Joan’s neighbor for a few years before I met my wife, Roswitha. When Roswitha and I became engaged, we went next door to share it with the Hawco family. Walter was the only one home at the time. He invited us in and we gave him the news of our engagement. His response was “There is nothing wrong with that”. That was the most unique and honest response we received from anyone. To this day, Roswitha and I will still use that phrase when responding to good news. We lived next door to Walter and Joan for over ten years before we moved out of Edmonton. Even though we left the neighborhood, Walter has always been with us with that response. Walter, will live forever in our hearts every time we use his phrase. Thank you Walter, for that life long inspiring response.

  7. My Aunt Rose was the aunt of Joan who passed before Walter.
Aunt Rose kept in touch with Walter talking on the phone up until his passing last year in 2022.
She knew him, Joan, Marie, Wally, Margaret Rose and their 2 daughters from over the many years.
My Aunt is the remaining child of 8 children, being the youngest at 97 this year.
As family, we send our love and prayers to all those who remember him. He was a great family man and had many dear friends.
RIP Walter, until we all meet again one day.
