Rena Ann Hameister (née Barton)
September 26, 1951 – July 5, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Rena Ann Hameister (née Barton) on July 5, 2025, in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 73.
Born on September 26, 1951 in Digby, Nova Scotia, Rena lived a life defined by tenacity, compassion, and love. She graduated with the nursing class of 1972 and began her career at St. Mary's Hospital in Halifax. Drawn westward by opportunity and adventure, she continued her calling as a neonatal nurse at the University of Alberta Hospital and later in many roles at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Her career was marked by tireless care, quiet strength, and a deep devotion to her patients. She was a force in the Royal Alexandra Hospital for over 40 years.
In December of 1982, Rena married the love of her life, Merton Hameister. She was a devoted and deeply proud mother to her two sons, Thor and Bradley, and later, a cherished Nana to Isaac and Ada, with whom she shared her greatest joys in retirement. To her grandkids, she will always be remembered for her silliness, her sense of humour, and her constant willingness to play hide-and-seek.
Rena had passion for the simple pleasures in life. She found beauty and tranquility in her flower garden; joy in baking and cooking, especially her legendary pickled beets, cornbread, “alcohol-free” fruitcake, and clam chowder; and pride in feeding the people she loved.
She will be dearly missed by Merton, Thor (Meghan Martyna), Bradley (Angela Jantz), Isaac and Ada, and by family and friends on both sides of the country.
Rena was predeceased by her beloved parents, Beatrice and Floyd Barton; her brothers, Melvin and Floyd Jr.; and her sister, Florence.
A Celebration of Life will be held in her honour on July 14 at 2:00 PM at the Kensington Community Hall, Edmonton. All are welcome to join in remembering Rena’s life and legacy.
In lieu of sending flowers, grow them and the relationships you cherish the most.
