On May 15, 2026, Krystyna Dembowska passed away in Edmonton, AB, surrounded by family. A loving wife, mother, and beloved Babcia, she created a home filled with warmth, tradition, and laughter. Born in Poland, Krystyna moved to Canada and built a meaningful life with her family while remaining closely connected to the Polish community.

As Principal of Henryk Sienkiewicz Polish School for more than two decades, Krystyna became a mentor and guiding presence for students and families. Her passion for preserving the Polish language, culture, and history will continue to be felt for generations. Krystyna also worked for many years at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Centre, where her kindness and care for others became a defining part of who she was.

Throughout her life, Krystyna was involved in Polish Scouts (Harcerstwo), where she formed lifelong friendships and earned the respected rank of Harcmistrzyni. She also remained active in numerous community organizations, including the Polish Combatants’ Association (SPK) and the International Heritage Language Association (IHLA). Education remained central to Krystyna’s life. She gave her time generously and believed strongly in helping children and families stay connected to their heritage. Affectionately known to many as “Pani Babcia,” she made people feel welcomed and supported.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, Krystyna was honoured with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, presented by Aleksandra Kucy, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Vancouver.

Krystyna was predeceased by her husband, Antoni Dembowski, and is survived by her children and grandchildren: eldest son Jack and his wife Sheri, and their sons Seth and Ethan; Caesar and his wife Anetta, and their children Markus, Merrick, and Arek; and youngest son Chris, his wife Nikki, and their daughter Senna. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings, extended family, lifelong friends, and former students.

Her love, lessons, and legacy will live on through the hearts she shaped.

  5. On behalf of my mother, Janina Muszynski and the entire Muszynski family, we wish to send our deepest condolences to the family of Krystyna Dembowska for their loss. We are extremely saddened by her passing. My mother came to know Krystyna through their common community work in Polish Canadian organizations in Edmonton, particularly the Polish Combatants Association in Canada, Branch # 6, Edmonton and through Polish Scouting (Harcerstwo). They would often meet at Polonia events in Edmonton. I had the privilege of getting to know Pani Dembowska in the past few years when we both would work AGLC casinos for Polonia organizations. There is something about long conversations at 12:30 am that are conducive to finding out what someone is like. For me, it was a great pleasure to get to know Krystyna Dembowska, who I considered to be an icon of the large Polish diaspora in Edmonton. She will be greatly missed!

  6. Z wielkim smutkiem żegnamy Panią Krystynę.
