It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marie Paterson on April 5, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 103 years. Marie’s remarkable spirit and zest for life were evident to all who knew her. She lived a vibrant life filled with great joy, leaving behind cherished memories that will continue to inspire for years to come.

Marie was born on November 27, 1920 in Expanse, Saskatchewan, where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Nursing School in 1944 and cared for many patients in Edmonton at the University, General and Royal Alexandra Hospitals. Marie continued to provide care and nursing help for her friends and family right up to her passing.

Marie’s husband, John, was born January 2, 1923 in Ayrshire, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1926. John, served in the RCAF, stationed in London, England for 2 years during WWII. After an honorable discharge he re-enlisted in the Canadian Navy for 2 additional years and served on destroyers in the North Atlantic. After the war John was on a travel adventure from Ontario, Canada to Mexico. He met his great love Marie as he was passing through Edmonton. John’s trip ended in Edmonton, never making it to Mexico. Marie and John were married on June 18, 1949, for 33 years, until his passing in 1982.

Marie lived a full life and kept busy with many social activities. She loved playing cards, doing puzzles, decorating, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. One of her great loves was animals, especially cats. On her 98th birthday she was cheering for “her Oilers” at Rogers Place. At 103 years of age, she never missed an Oilers game on TV and was looking forward to the 2024 playoffs.

Marie was a true matriarch to her family and an amazing mother to her three children, Glenna (Randy) Hayes, Gina (Shawn) Carlson and Scott (Cathy Cave), as well as a loving grandmother to her five grandchildren, Mark Hayes (Ruke Okeme), Leah (Nathan) Hayes-Fry, Jaime Brad) Michaleski, Cassandra and Carmen and great grandmother to Theodore R T Fry.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John and daughter, Gina.

A family celebration of life will take place at a later date.

  1. I did not know Marie but after reading her obituary I wish I had, for several reasons. On of those reasons is that we share the same name. My married name is O’Neill, but my maiden name is Paterson. I can bet that Marie, like me, often had to correct others when they tried to spell it with 2 ‘T’ s.. my grandfather was from Glasgow. May Marie rest in peace! Enjoy your fond memories. From Mary Paterson O’Neill in St. Albert

  2. Such a tremendous loss of a fabulous lady! You will be missed Marie. Love D&G

  3. Deepest Sympathy ,
Scott Cathy and all the Paterson Family
We are so sorry to hear of your mothers passing
Remember all your special memories you shared
    Life is a precious gift
Once shared they remain for ever in our hearts

  4. Scott and Glenna and families, I am so sorry to hear of Marie’s passing. Ethel T. told me today. She, Ethel T., and my mom (Ethel Wood RIP) really kept things lively at Rosedale for some years and I was happy to remain friends with both after my mom passed. Marie and I shared the love of cats, and we could always have a good chat about the CFL in general and Edmonton in particular (she was more than hockey!). Sincere condolences to you all and wishes for many fond memories of a life well lived.
