Panagiota Michailides
Panagiota Michailides glowed softly in the world. Fueled by faith, she made it her purpose to serve the community that welcomed her decades ago. Giving motivated her; praise did not. So, she lived a life full of action: care giving, garden weeding, snow shovelling, hedge trimming, sweetbread baking, dress sewing, layette knitting, chalk holding, puzzle solving, solitaire flipping, joke loving, baby catching, mountain hiking, house fixing, vegetable picking, bleach laundering. She was beautiful and she lit our way.
Born during dangerous times, she left in trying days, but she used her life and gifts to quietly craft the world around her into a better one. Panagiota acted without audience, without fanfare, yet always with brilliance. Though soft, there was iron in her and a resolve to use it kindly.
Panagiota is survived by her children Stavros and Carolyn, Kostas and Maria, Olga, and the many staff at Capital Care Norwood who called her Mama and the friends who came in and out of our lives over the years. She was yiayia to Alethea and Matthew, Mikaela and Scott, Anthie and Sam, Alexandra and Logan, Michael, Amanda, and Katherine. Panagiota is predeceased by her husband George; her parents Yiorgios and Agape; her sisters Eleni, Theophani, and Vasiliki; her brother Simeon; and her beloved canary, Rafiki.
We will honour Panagiota’s life at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church (10831 124 St, Edmonton, AB) on Monday, 11 August 2025 at 10:15 a.m. Her internment follows at Westlawn Memorial Gardens (16310 Stony Plain Rd, Edmonton, AB).
