
Butram Alphonso Barnes
Butram Alphonso Barnes, lovingly known as “Big Man,” was born on February 16, 1938 (registered March 16th by his dad who stated “mi already have too many pickney born February” Lol, Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. and went home to rest on June 10, 2026.
Butram attended St. Anne’s Primary School and was raised by his uncle, Mr. David Barnes, whom he dearly cherished. He later became a skilled carpenter by trade, a craft he practiced with dedication and pride.
He was preceded in by his mother, Jane Reid, and his father, Henry Barnes, as well as his siblings: John Barnes, Austin Barnes, Mavis Barnes, Gloria Barnes, and Leethy Barnes, also his eldest niece Joan Cobbler. Butram (Alphonso) was the third child of his mother, Jane Reid.
While living in Washington Gardens, Jamaica,Butram aka Big Man played a pivotal role in raising and supporting one niece, one nephew and three grandnieces: Dawn Burton, Navier Samuels, Pita-Gaye Osogo, Sharone Evans, and Ian Barnes. He later adopted Ian, raising and loving him as his own son.
Family was the center of Butram’s life. He maintained close bonds with relatives, especially his cousin Clinton Barnes, lovingly known as Uncle Lanny. Big Man leaves behind a large and loving family, including numerous cousins who will forever cherish his memory.
In 1983 Butram married Elizabeth (nee Rowe) then migrated to Edmonton. AB .Canada in 1984. They adopted Ian Barnes, who later joined him in Canada and he began a new chapter and extended his family.
He also adopted Elizabeth’s daughter Stehanie Barnes.
He was baptized at Bethel Aposotlic then later became a member of FFWC. He was also a member of JANA(Jamaica Assoc of Northern AB)
Butram worked at Grant McEwan downtown campus until he retired in 2003
He will be remembered for his strength, his generosity, his humor, and the deep love he carried for those around him. His legacy lives on in the many hearts he touches.
He leaves behind his wife Elizabeth, children, grandchildren, great grand grandchildren, nieces, great nieces, cousins and extended family
