Edgar Lorne Mitchell

July 21, 2022 7 Condolences Print Obituary Send Flowers

Edgar was born on November 22, 1937 and left us on July 13, 2022.  He leaves to mourn his passing his loving family, wife Carole, son Scott, daughter Daphne and step-son David (Tracy).

He was predeceased by his parents Lorne and Myrle and his brother Wesley. He also leaves grand dogs Mable and Ogie and his nurse, grand cat Annie. He is now spending time with Ruth who crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Edgar was born and raised in Wainwright and was blessed with a happy childhood enjoying summers at Clearlake, time in Young Peoples at this church, many years with Sea Cadets, and participating in hockey, curling and golf. After school he worked at the Husky Refinery before deciding to enter the field of education. Edgar spent his adult years working as a teacher and principal in Fort McMurray where he was well respected by students, parents and educators.  He was known for his kindness, fairness and wisdom. It is here Edgar joined the Masons and just completed his fifty years with the organization. After retirement, he built the cabin at the lake where he spent many happy days watching birds, listening to music, having coffee with friends, cheering on his marvelous Oilers and travelling to distant locales . At this time he affiliated with Buffalo Park Lodge and took many offices including the position of District Deputy.
Failing health determined a need to move from our beloved lake to Edmonton where he later passed.

A memorial service will be held at the Grace United Church in Wainwright, AB. at 1:00 pm on Tuesday August the 2nd, 2022.

  1. Our condolences, Carole, on your loss of Edgar. Time went by too quickly and we never got to meet or if we did, I do not recall when that happened.
    May his memory be eternal.
    Gloria & Ron

  2. We are so sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. We have many, many very fond memories of wonderful times spent with him and Carole. That down-to-earth manner, that wonderful chuckle, and his huge contribution to the world of Fort McMurray education will never be forgotten. Regrettably, covid had kept us from visiting him and Carole in their relocated home in Edmonton, but we cherish the many hours spent with them in Fort McMurray and at their home at Clear Lake. The world has lost a terrific husband, father, educator and friend.

Give Ruth a pat from us. RIP.

  3. Dear Carole,
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead,
and loving memories to forever hold in your heart.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love cousin Marlynn & Lew Pryce

  4. Thank you so much Marilynn and Lew. Your kind words are comforting and much appreciated.
    Love,
    Carole

  5. Dear Carole,
I am very sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. I have such respect for the man he was. As a young administrator in Fort McMurray, I looked up to Ed and was drawn in by his sense of genuine purpose, his calm way of managing the challenges that came his way, his kindness toward everyone and, above all, the humour that was such an integral part of his personality.
I’ll share as well that our friend George Decker thought the world of Ed and always spoke so very highly of him.
Sincere condolences to you and to your family Carole.

  6. Carole. Just read of Ed’s passing. Hopefully you’re doing ok. Come for a visit when you’re ready.

    Sandy.

  7. By accident I found this obituary recently. Edgar’s father Lorne was my Dad’s (Bill Slavin’s) brother, so Edgar was my first cousin. Because Dad was adopted by Slavins shortly after he was born (Dad’s mother, Mable, died soon after bearing him), my family never knew the western branch of the Mitchells well although Dad made contact with all his birth brothers and sister Leila at some point. I am one of 8 siblings, all living in Ontario except for one in Saskatoon.
I am sorry to hear of Edgar’s death, and sorry for not making contact earlier. Please contact me if you feel inclined to.
