The family of Effie Margaret Giles, 80, of Edmonton, Alberta, is deeply saddened to announce her peaceful passing on Sunday, July 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous journey with dementia.

Effie was born on August 13, 1945, in Ramea, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the late Carrie and Louis Kendall. She was the second of eleven children and grew up in a large, close-knit family, where she learned the values of faith, love, hard work, compassion, and caring for others—qualities that remained with her throughout her life. It was there that she grew up and met the love of her life, Wilfred Giles. Together, they built a life rooted in the community, she always called home.

She shared many wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Wilfred Giles, building a life founded on faith, love, commitment, and family. Together, they raised four children, instilling in them the values of kindness, compassion, respect, and unconditional love.

Effie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She dedicated her life to creating a warm and loving home where family always came first. She found joy in life's simple blessings: spending time with those she loved, sharing meals, celebrating family traditions, and welcoming everyone with kindness and a generous heart. Her gentle spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering love left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

She was a longtime member of the Ladies' Auxiliary in Ramea, where she faithfully volunteered her time in support of her community. She valued the friendships she made through the organization and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

Effie leaves to cherish her memory her loving children, Gladys Kucy (Rory Kucy), Stewart Giles, Wayne Giles (Michelle Giles), and Zeta Norris (Grant Norris); her cherished grandchildren, Ryan Kucy, Aaron Kucy, Mason Giles (Vincent Chiang), Ashley Norris (Byron Hackett), Lucas Norris (Sarah Raymond), Zacharey Giles (Miranda Trimble), and Kristian Giles (Domi Volascsek); and her adored great-grandchildren, Hunter Giles, Kash Giles, Kane Giles, and Blake Hackett.

Effie is also lovingly remembered by Sarah King, the mother of her great grandchild, Kane Giles.

Effie is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Jane Lushman (Jack Lushman) and Bessie Kendall (Bob Johnson); her brothers, Stewart Kendall (Gertie Kendall), Truman Kendall (Dorothy Kendall), Kevin Kendall (Dorothy Kendall), Michael Kendall (Louise Kendall), and Victor Kendall (Melita Kendall).

Effie is also lovingly remembered by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Piercey (Reg Piercey), Irene Giles, Iris Giles, Minnie Giles, and Brenda Giles; her brothers-in-law, George Giles (Joyce Giles); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by her kindness and love.

Effie is also lovingly remembered by her dear friend, Edna McGrath.

Effie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Wilfred Giles; her parents, Carrie and Louis Kendall; her sisters, Sadie Carroll, Beatrice Rose, and Marjorie Walsh; her sisters-in-law, Minnie Keeping , Minnie Giles, Mary Lushman and Alfreda Cornish; and her brothers-in-law, Ivan Giles, Bert Giles, Raymond Giles, and Tom Giles.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and caregivers whose compassion, kindness, dedication, and exceptional care provided comfort and preserved Effie's dignity throughout her journey with dementia. Your unwavering commitment a nd support will always be remembered with profound appreciation and lasting gratitude.

Celebration of Life In keeping with Effie's wishes, cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life honoring Effie will be held on August 29, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., at 50 Harmony Place, Sherwood Park, Alberta. A private interment will take place in Ramea, Newfoundland and Labrador, in the summer of 2027, where Effie will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Wilfred Giles.

Her Legacy
Effie will be remembered for her gentle heart, steadfast faith, and unconditional love for her family. She taught by example that life's greatest treasures are found in kindness, generosity, and the love we share with one another. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her love and legacy will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
