Jeannie Dare
Jeannie Dare, age 93, passed away on May 25, 2026 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Her Chinese name was Lui Sook Chun; she was born on October 28, 1932 in Singapore. She spent her early years in China, where she was raised by her Grandmother. She eventually moved to Hong Kong, where she remained until 1971. She met and married George in 1952. She gave birth to three children: Cecilia in 1953, Teresa in 1954, and Peter in 1955. She was initiated into the Roman Catholic faith in 1959. During her time in Hong Kong, she briefly worked as an acupuncturist; she enjoyed beading and swimming with her children on the weekends.
George moved to Edmonton, Canada in 1955, and then brought the family over to live with him in 1971. She gave birth to her fourth child, Kenneth in that same year. She found employment as a seamstress at Great Western Garment Company (GWG)/Levi Strauss, where she remained for over 20 years, until her retirement at 65. Afterwards, she volunteered at Edmonton’s Food Bank for about 15 years - she made many friends there, including her close friends Sook-Ling and Vivian.
Jeannie was a strong, independent woman who raised four children by herself. She was also quite generous; she donated to various charities. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, gardening, cooking, baking, beading and especially travelling – she had been to the United States, Mexico, and Europe, in addition to revisiting mainland China and Hong Kong. She had a sweet tooth and enjoyed a variety of pastries and candies. Before she lost her hearing, she was fond of 1950s-early 1960s rock music, mellow instrumentals and other adult contemporary easy-listening songs. In her later years, she enjoyed watching Indian soap operas and Dancing With The Stars.
She was predeceased by her Grandmother, as well as her parents (whose names are unknown). She is survived by her four children Cecilia, Teresa, Peter and Kenneth, her grandchildren Renny, Jennifer, Michelle, Janice, Alicia, and Austin, and her great-granddaughter Aliyana.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Edmonton’s Food Bank or Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation.
