Joan Ffoulkes-Jones (née Shaw), 85, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away on Friday, July 10th in Edmonton General Hospital surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born on January 31st, 1941 in Lethbridge to Elaine and John Shaw. She was the middle child, with older sister Lynne born in 1938 and seven years later came her baby brother, Russ.

Joan went on to become a registered nurse, working in obstetrics at the General Hospital in Calgary.

She married David Ffoulkes-Jones on December 8, 1962 and they had three children, Geoff, Todd and Niki. They moved to Edmonton in 1971 and she paused her career to spend more time with the family.

Joan went back to university, acquiring a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical history from the University of Alberta in 1993.

She returned to nursing in 1998 and worked at a seniors lodge in Edmonton, retiring in 2011. She had a passion for caring for others, and it shone through in the work she did both as a nurse and in her everyday life. After embracing a life of sobriety with strength and determination, she became passionate about uplifting and supporting others through their own journeys. Joan was a source of support for many throughout multiple facets of her life.

She is survived by her beloved children Niki (Guri), Todd (Aliya), Geoff (Irene), and brother Russ (Pam), as well as many nieces, nephews, and seven grandchildren she adored. She was predeceased by her mother Elaine, father John, and sister Lynne.

Joan was a sharp, clever, spirited woman with an infectious laugh that no one will ever forget. She will be remembered by her love for her family, reading, dogs, crossword puzzles and so much more. Her most cherished memories include her special place, her cabin at Sandy Lake and her time spent in Italy doing an archaeological dig during her second degree through the University of Alberta. She brought laughter, entertaining stories and witty jokes into every room she walked into, her beautiful energy will be deeply missed.
