It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Captain (Ret’d) John Leonard Pinsent, a beloved father and grandfather, and Poppy to many, who left this world peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at the age of 94.

John was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on September 24, 1930 to John and Margaret Pinsent, moving back to homeland Newfoundland shortly after where he proudly lived the majority of his early life.  John was a devoted husband to his late wife Marjorie Joan (nee Rose) and nurturing father to Jeanette (Stu), John (Tennille), Shirley (Dennis) and William. He was Poppy to Jason (Linette), Marlena (Ted), Chantal (Ryan), Jonathan (Yvette), Robert (Erika), Tierany (Mike), Kyle (Molly), Tarken, Tajah and his 7 amazing great grandchildren of which he so adored - with one more on the way.   John was pre-deceased by his beloved parents John and Margaret Pinsent, his cherished wife Marjorie, his son William and sisters Eileen and Audrey. His family takes solace knowing he is now with them resting peacefully.

John retired in Edmonton Alberta. A Veteran, he had a deep sense of honour and community and enjoyed an extensive career of service to his country as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was a long-standing member of the EUSI and the Royal Canadian Legion.

John was incredibly kind and had an abundance of love to share.  He took immense joy and pride in all his family, particularly his grand and great grandkids.  Family was at heart of everything he did. He was a friend to so many people who met and loved him.  He had the rare gift of making everyone feel seen and special.  He filled our lives with love, laughter, wisdom, and support. John is holding hands with Marjorie now, the great love of his life. His spirit lives on in our hearts and the memories we hold.

A celebration of John’s amazing life will be held on Saturday May 10, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Funeral Home (10530 116 Street, Edmonton AB)

The family would also like to thank Chartwell Westcott and all of the healthcare providers who took such amazing care of our Poppy.

  1. Dear Family.
I never had the Honour to meet your Dad/Poppy, but I truly felt the need to say this:
Thank you Sir for your service to our great nation, Canada. It IS because of YOUR service that our country has succeeded, and our people ARE safe.
    God Bless you Richly, Sir.
“Well done, they Good and Faithful Servant, well done!!!”

    • Thank you kindly. Our family appreciates your note.

  2. I will miss our coffee times. I will miss our political discussions. I will miss trying to figure out the tv remote control with you, or the computer when it wouldn’t work properly, and the printer when it wouldn’t print. In the short 13 years we’ve known each other, we had some great chats and I’m so proud to know you and I know I’m a better person for it. Poppy, I will so miss you.

    • Poppy was also so happy when you came over to help him with his TV, remote control, computer and any other little thing he needed help with. And he always would ask, “what’s Dennis up to? I enjoy our coffees!” He so enjoyed your coffee dates and fabulous conversations. I so appreciate all the love and support you shared with Poppy.

    • THANK YOU Dennis for all you’ve done to support our Dad and his family, especially our Shirley. You have been patient, kind, loyal and above all a well loved companion to our Dad – especially as he faced the challenges of aging and change. I hope you know how much he loved to get a rise out of you on occasion – a sign that you were truly an accepted member of the clan. Much love from us!

  3. Our sincere sympathy to all of our relatives on the passing of our precious Uncle John. He was well loved and respected and will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May “Poppy” Rest in Peace. Sending healing hugs.

    • Thank you so much. Hugs and much love to you all as well. He loved you all dearly and enjoyed our visits to Newfoundland over several of the last few years when we were able to travel with him. You always welcomed us with open arms and so much love.

  4. Jeanette, Johnny,Shirley and families
Sorry to hear of Uncle John’s passing. He always considered Newfoundland his “home”. He always made a point of dropping in to see us when he visited.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
Take care of yourselves and each other.
    Virginia (Arthur), Barbara and families.

    • Thank you so much. Agreed, Dad always said Newfoundland was his home and we enjoyed our visits with you when we last were able to come your way. Love and hugs to all.

    • Thank you Virginia and Barbara. Our Dad remembered you well and enjoyed all your visits when he “came home”. I do hope we can see each other again some day!

  5. My sincere sympathy to you Shirley, and your entire family. I feel like I know your Dad, from all the conversations we had where you spoke so highly and kindly of him. I know how deeply you loved and cared for him. He sure left a great legacy. I hope all your fond and happy memories bring you comfort during this sad time.

    • Thank you so much Carla. Our Poppy/Dad does indeed leave a legacy of love to us all and we will miss him so much. Your kindness, comforting words and support is greatly appreciated by me, and all my family.

  6. Every once in a while, the universe gives the world a special human to shine a light on it and be an example of humanity for those they whose lives they touch. Dad was a beacon of kindness and generosity and anyone who was fortunate enough to spend time with him, walked away a better human.

The world is a little darker without him in it. I will miss everything about him in my life. I loved him deeply and unconditionally and he made me feel the same way. Love you dad and thank you for being in my life. To my extended family, my deepest condolences as we grieve together the gap his passing has left in our lives.

    • Line, thank you so much for your beautiful words and all your love and support. Truer words could not be spoken. Dad was such a kind and loving man and a father we will never forget. My heart is broken but it will slowly heal with all the memories and love bestowed on us all. I feel a great loss but know that he lives on within me, our family and everyone else he touched.

    • Thank you Line. I hope you know how much all your visits and care meant to him over all the years you knew each other. His affection for you never wavered but grew. He was truly blessed by your care and encouragement. Thank you dear lady!
