Claire Marie Stephenson (née Marie-Claire Lareau)
Claire passed away in St. Albert, Alberta, with family by her side. Born in Lachine, Quebec, she began life under difficult circumstances—her mother died in childbirth, and she was raised by her maternal grandmother. Despite many years spent in convent school, she found joy and companionship in her cousins and carried a deep love for family throughout her life.
She was smart, hardworking and resourceful, studying at business college and landing a secretarial job at a radio station. She never sat still for long—friends, music, and adventure were always part of her life.
Claire married “the first Englishman she met” and started a family in Toronto. She and her husband raised four children: David, Michèle, Suzie, and Nicky. Though she embraced her new life, she never lost her French-Canadian roots—or quite her accent. In the 1970s, the family moved west and settled in the Edmonton area, where she would remain.
In her single years, Claire’s sense of adventure only grew. She travelled widely—to Italy, Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, England, France, the U.S., Bermuda, Trinidad and Columbia and most meaningfully, to Israel. She was stylish, practical, and always ready, with her hair carefully done in her signature auburn. She could stretch a dollar and still show up looking sharp.
Claire spoke four languages—French, English, Hebrew, and Italian—and kept learning and seeking throughout her life. In retirement, her lifelong search for faith led her to become a Messianic Jew, where she embraced Jewish traditions while continuing her pursuit of Jesus. It was a spiritual homecoming she had long awaited.
She drew in people from all walks of life and built lasting friendships that supported and enriched her life. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren stayed close, each with their own bond and stories with her.
Claire was predeceased by her son David and by her dear friend Paul. Her family thanks all who shared in her life and supported her in her later years, including the caring staff at Shepherd’s Care, who became friends too.
Our deepest condolences to the family,
Claire was a Wonderful lady, so much fun to be with and her faith was genuine.
She will be missed by so many.
Our prayers are with you at this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Tim and Chantal Halisky ♥♥
Thank you, my mom was the greatest friend to me(Michele) and brought joy to so many.
Clair was a beautiful soul and brought so much joy to those around her. I had the privilege of getting to know her while my dad was at Norwood the same time she was. Always a twinkle in her eye and a hug to share! I wouldn’t dare visit dad without seeking her out, but often I would find the two of them sitting at a table chatting…probably scheming about how to get into trouble…ha! She was always the best dressed person in the room too, so much class, but beyond her outside polish, her heart was so big and kind, she was a gem. The world was a better place because she was in it, and now heaven is even better because she’s there ❤️ Condolences and prayers to the family…until you all meet again 🕊️
Dear auntie Claire,
living in Ontario somewhat disconnected, when I lost my dear Robert, 8 yrs ago this June, it was he who took the opportunity to visit MY relatives on his drive to Canada’s Artic two year earlier. Claire and family were welcoming to Robert including Michell in Grande Prairie on his road trip.
However, following his passing …I will always cherish Claire’s stamina to travel to Ontario for Robert’s passing accompanied by Nicky.
Two years later I decided to visit Edmonton’s beautiful city and stay with Claire and Nicky …seeing family .. including Joy and second cousins.
What an insight Claire gave to the meaning of: “living life to the best!”
She inspired me and as always remembered as “The Classy Lady”
Thank you Patricia.
Nicky so sad to hear of your Mom’s passing. I know she will really be missed. She was definitely never dull or boring, she was a real firecracker. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
Kim and I were so sad to hear of Clair’s passing. She was an amazing lady who loved life and her family. We are sending our thoughts and love to everyone she held in her heart at this difficult time.
Not often do my residents impact my life the way Claire did. From the day I did her assessment sitting in the dinning room we hit it off.
Claire and I had many conversations and shared many memories that I will forever hold close to my heart. She inspired me, advised me, comforted me and sometimes just listened to me.
One thing I am sure of is the love she had for her family. She had a big heart and I truly feel blessed to have known her and meet some of many amazing humans who meant the world and then some to her.
The best birthday gift I could have asked this year was the last hug and smile she gave me the day before my birthday this month ❤️
Be kind yourselves and my deepest condolences to the family.
Thank you, Ty. In two years at Shepherd’s Care, she had an amazingly rich life and a loving community. Your memories of her mean a great deal to me.
Nicky
