Isabel Werner
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Isabel Werner on Oct 25, 2024 at the age of 90 years. We have lost a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a friend to many. She is survived by her husband Al of some 65 years, daughter Gen Howland (Doug), grandsons Daniel and Thomas, son Todd (Simona), sister Irene Heisler (Willie - deceased), and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her eldest son Lyle, her parents Vincent and Vera Kozan, brother's Ernie (Kelly) and Joseph (Faye), and nephew Kerry Kozan.
Professionally, Isabel was a teacher. Prior to her marriage to Al in 1959 and after graduating from Moose Jaw Teacher's College, she taught in Regina, SK, Surrey BC and then at Radium Hot Springs, BC. She then took leave to raise a family but eventually obtained her B.Ed. degree at the University of Alberta in 1976. She then taught in the Edmonton public school system until retirement in 1994. Isabel was a very devoted teacher and enabled her students to achieve very high standards.
Isabel was a very active person; a home gardener, a music teacher, choir leader, aqua jog/water exercise leader, quilter, scrap booker, bridge player, and one who energetically maximized home economics.
Isabel and Al enjoyed many travels together, including the Holy Land and several trips to Hungary to reconnect with relatives. She subsequently wrote and published a book, "This One Will Live", about her maternal grandparents and parents history and struggles. As 'snowbirds' they wintered in Arizona for several years.
Isabel pursued and accomplished many things in her life - always oriented towards family, a healthy lifestyle, and subscribed to the honor of traditional and classical values. She will be missed by many - especially that beautiful smile.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 at St. Thomas More parish (210 Haddow Close, NW, Edmonton, AB) at 11:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon. Interment to follow luncheon at St. Anthony Cemetery.
My deepest condolences tp Al and family. Isabel was like a second mom to me when we connected after my mother passed away when I owned Duggan Flowers. Isabel and I shared lots of times together – sewing and gardening things. A beautiful and generous woman whom I am privileged to have known and loved. Memory eternal Isabel. Rest in Peace.
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted’. Matthew 5:4
With love in Christ,
Your friend, Betty
The passing of Isabel will leave a huge gap in many lives. She was a treasured friend and admired colleague for many years. Always on the go, involved in so many activities, and the first one to lend a hand when others were in need. Her zest for life and the willingness to explore new pursuits after retirement were inspiring to many a younger soul. Masseuse, avid aquafit participant, writer, master gardener- the list goes on and on. I hope she is at peace and her family is comforted by many wonderful memories and inspired by her positive outlook and resilience.
With family and friends gathered, I know that Isabel will be well and fondly remembered. She was an inspirational life that will not be forgotten. I recognized those traits in both her and Al on the first day that we had met at our condo building.
She left a great legacy of life teaching and life learning to everyone who met her and heard how she had overcome so many challenges.
With great sorrow, I will miss herself , her life stories and her friendly but strong will.
Best wishes and well feelings to all family and friends who have lost a well loved lady.
