With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Brashko, our cherished brother and friend, at the age of 54, on Sunday, January 26, 2025. James left us far too soon, leaving behind his loving twin sister Karen, along with sisters Beth, Kathy, Dianne, and Brenda; brothers John and David; 10 nieces and nephews; 15 great nieces and nephews; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless close friends. James was predeceased by his parents, Donna and Tony, and his sister Tina.

James was particularly close with his aunt Noreen, Uncle Len, and cousins Tiffiney and Chilton, sharing stories and poetry at many holiday dinners.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 26, 1970, James grew up in Stony Plain, near Hubble’s Lake, where he created lasting memories of life on the lake and caring for a variety of animals, including goats, chickens, rabbits, birds, dogs, and cats.

Everyone who knew James would describe him as a gentle, kind, and caring soul with a great sense of humor. He had a unique gift for reciting poems, often sharing one spontaneously.  A true wanderer, James never stayed in one place for long, always eager to meet new people and share stories.

James had a love for animals, history—particularly anything related to the Titanic—movies like Back to the Future, the Edmonton Oilers, and music. He was known to sing his favorite song, “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, at any given moment.

A talented writer, James penned over 1,000 poems, some of which were published in newspapers and shared with family and friends. He was ambidextrous, teaching himself to write with both hands, and was able to memorize most of his poetry.

James’ memory will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.

  5. Our dearest nephew, James: Our hearts are saddened that you have left us.
So many phone calls and poems we shared We will miss you so very much.
We shall always remember how you camped out with us while making your dolls.
Your smile and love was deeply felt and you will never be forgot

  6. A gentle giant who always came charging over with the biggest smile and arms wide open when I would bump into I’m out in community. That’s how I knew him and will remember him.

Very saddened to hear of his life here on earth being cut short. I have many memories of James in my heart. Many talks, poems he shared, his most important books I guarded at his request, laughs, tears on the good days and through the tough ones too, the list goes on.

I hold a very special video memory he asked me record of him in our office sharing a poem he wanted to bless a man in recovery with to help strengthen him in his healing journey. He was a kind, caring and compassionate man. It was an honour to share space with him and see how his light could brighten a room.

A beautiful man with that smile so big that it could light up a room. I’m smiling ear to ear just thinking of it!

He was a special man to many. He will be very missed.

James my friend, you left a light. I’m sorry you had to leave so soon. Thank you for trusting me with your words, your work and your friendship.

Sending heartfelt condolences to Jame’s family and all those whom he was special too. Our PFK communities hearts are with you all.
