In Loving Memory of Jason David Morton
May 7, 1973 - August 5, 2025
On August 5, 2025 Jason David Morton, known in Edmonton’s music scene as DJ Blue Jay, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family following a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Jason’s legacy through his contributions to the Edmonton music scene and vintage Volkswagen clubs will continue to live on. Jason was 52 years old.
Born on May 7, 1973, Jason grew up in Spruce Grove, Alberta, but lived his entire adult life in Edmonton. This is where he became a defining figure in the city’s vibrant music and cultural scene. If you’ve ever danced the night away or lost yourself in the beat at Starlite Room, Black Dog Freehouse, the Rev, Buckingham, Lush, Halo, the Common among many others, chances are Jason was behind the decks. He was the driving force behind countless legendary nights including the launch of Mod Club and I Love 80’s Dance Party. One of the many highlights from his career spinning vinyl, was his involvement in the Champ City DJs where he DJ’d Oilers’ pre-show and after parties at Rogers Place.
Beyond the turntables, Jason had a deep love for Volkswagens. He co-founded the Air Riders VW Club in Edmonton. His passion for both music and cars was only outshone by his love for the people around him. Jason’s warm heart and generosity were known to all who crossed his path and will be missed by those who loved him.
Jason is survived by his parents, Bevin and Rita Morton; his sister Crystal; his nephews Ryder and Carter; his best friend and cousin Greg Charters; and his beloved partner for the past two years Robin Schloss. He will also be deeply missed by countless friends, family, and fellow music and car lovers.
Jason was just a really great guy and everyone’s best friend. He had the ability to bring life and light into every room and to everyone around him. Always with a smile on his face and music in his heart. Whether it was his infectious laugh, his laid-back demeanor, or his passion for sharing new sounds with others, Jason was the kind of person you wanted to have by your side.
Jason’s spirit will continue to resonate in the soundtracks of our lives, forever remembered with gratitude and love.
A celebration of Jason's life will be held on November 22, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Starlite Room.
