It is with tremendous sadness and grief that we announce the passing of Ross Bishop Jopling on the morning of October 18, 2025 after a 12 year battle with cancer.

Ross spent the majority of his career working in management at The Side Track and the University of Alberta Bookstore where he met and made many lifelong friends, including his wife, Paige Schwartzenberger whom he married in 2011.

Ross was an animal lover extraordinaire who loved to help others in his quiet ways. Ross was a kind, caring, intelligent man and the funniest human you could ever call your friend. He will be greatly missed by all those lucky enough to call him a friend.

Ross is survived by his parents Bill and Denyse Jopling, his brother Garth Jopling and his wife Elizabeth Wolfe, and their children Sydney and Calum Jopling, his brother Tom and his wife Anne and their children Ellen and Narin Jopling. Ross is also survived by some wonderful and supportive friends Ellery Lew, Ron Sorokin, Julie Angus and Allison Jerome. Thank you all for your wonderful and unwavering support during these difficult times. Ross was a very lucky man to have had such an amazing group of friends

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Ross Jopling Memorial fund that is being set up through the Edmonton Community Foundation. This fund will be donating to the Leukaemia and Lymphoma society and Second Chance Animal Rescue on a yearly basis.

  1. My sincere condolences to the Jopling family in their recent loss of a very brave and amiable Ross.

  2. We grew up with the Jopling family in the Laurier Heights community and we are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Ross Jopling . We are very grateful to have enjoyed the kindness, compassion and humor of a brave young man who has left us far too soon . Our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Jopling family at this time .

  3. The Johnson kids went to Laurier with Ross and Tom; I think Garth was older than us. I remember Ross as always smiling and happy. I didn’t know him well (I was in Tom’s grade) but my heartfelt sympathies go out to the Jopling family and those who loved Ross and enjoyed his friendship.

  4. Deepest Condolences to Paige and the Jopling family. Ross was one of the funniest people I ever knew and it was a great pleasure to work alongside him at the UofA Bookstore for many years. The world is poorer for his loss; he was a wonderful person.

  5. Absolutely heartbroken with the passing of Ross – he was an incredibly influential person in my life working with him at the University of Alberta Bookstore. He was an unbelievably patient, kind and genuinely caring person. His sense of humour was second to none and he had an effortless way of making everyone around him feel at ease. His love for animals was very prominent and spoke to the kind hearted nature of this amazing man. I will remember Ross often with much admiration for the rest of my life.

  6. Ross was one of the neatest individuals I’ve ever known. He was a great friend and school buddy with both my daughters and felt like part of my family. Polite, caring, thoughtful, funny, very respectful ….. he was a fabulous individual… as my daughter says, she felt like she ‘d ‘lost another brother today when Ross passed”. The Joplings were a wonderful family near us in Laurier and Ross has been part of my family since kindergarten. Bill and Denyse, I’m so sorry for your loss of your incredible son. We all loved Ross and will remember him with fond memories .

  7. My heartfelt condolences to all who held Ross and his loved ones tight in their hearts. The world has lost an amazing soul, fly high my friend, you will be deeply missed.

  8. I’m so sorry to learn about Ross, who was a childhood friend on the block in Laurier, and such a kind and sweet friend. When I remember my childhood I hold Ross and the entire Jopling family in a special place in my heart. Many condolences.

  9. I miss Ross, and send my condolences. I’ve known him all my life, and in Laurier, Ross Shep, and U of A. He was so kind, and humorous. He and my Brother David, who has now passed were best of friends. I hope they are golfing and having fun up there in Heaven. I miss you, Ross.

  10. My sincere condolences and deep sympathy go out to the Jopling Family with the loss of dear Ross. Young Ross was a special piano student of mine in those early days when we were very close neighbours facing each other from just across the street (and walking distance to the Laurier Heights hockey rink). He was able to play a superb recital version of McCartney’s “Yesterday” after just a few short lessons – which made his teacher look very good indeed. Godspeed, Ross.
