It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Helen (Halia) Smetaniuk (nee Symchych), August 17, 2026, at the age of 91 years.

Helen was born on August 31, 1934, in the home of her parents just outside Hafford, Saskatchewan. She lived a life rooted in faith and service to others.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Walter Smetaniuk, and her youngest son, James. She is survived by her eldest son, George, as well as her four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will cherish the memories shared throughout her life.

She spent 20 years working for Pepsi Co and was awarded a plaque for her years of service. She was also a devoted member of St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor, Helen spent much of her life serving her church community. She generously volunteered her time helping prepare the Ukrainian delicacies sold at church fundraisers and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Her most cherished role was serving as a Canterer, where she travelled with priests to smaller communities to support church services and share her faith with others.

The Church was at the centre of Helen's life. Her deep faith guided her actions, and her servant heart touched countless lives. She found great purpose in serving God, her church, and her community, leaving a legacy of humility and devotion.

Helen was fiercely independent throughout her life. When dementia eventually made it necessary for her to enter care, she kept the staff on their toes with her determination and strong spirit. Her final years were spent at Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre, where she formed meaningful friendships with the staff who cared for her and accompanied her on the final stage of her journey. Many expressed how much they would miss her wit, kindness, and sense of humour.

Helen loved music and rarely passed up an opportunity to join in a song. However, it was the hymns sung during church services that brought her the greatest joy and comfort. Her faith remained a source of strength throughout her life and right to the end.

Helen will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory be eternal.
