James Stephen Muldowney
We are sad to announce the sudden death of Professor James Muldowney. He died at home in his 83rd year on March 7th, 2022.
Cherishing his memory are his beloved wife of nearly 58 years, Fidelma, his children Siobhán (George MacMillan), Maeve (Mike Lee) and Eamonn. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren Rory, Thomas, Marcus, Nica and Victoria. He also leaves his brothers Dick and Pat and sisters, Catherine and Anne as well as his O’Gorman brothers and sisters-in-law Ethna, Vincent, Dorothy and Ralph, all in Ireland.
He was a respected professor at the University of Alberta and will be remembered by his colleagues and former students in the Department of Mathematics.
Jim was born in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, educated at Coláiste Íosagán (Ballyvourney), National University of Ireland Galway and the University of Alberta.
As a new immigrant to Canada in 1962 he made a significant contribution to many sports organizations in Edmonton, including the Rowing Club, Chasquis running and the Nordic ski club.
A private family burial will take place. There will be a celebration of Jim’s life at a later date.

Fidelma, Siobhan , Maeve and Eamonn… I was startled to hear of Jim’s death. Though we live daily with the realization that this is necessary it never ceases to be a shock. The end of his life will affect you all differently.
Of course, the living of his life has affected you all differently…remember the fond memories and let loose any difficult memories.

I offer my sincere condolences to the family of Prof Muldowney. He was my favourite professor during my undergraduate degree in the early 90s. He always encouraged me and treated all students with kindness and respect. Memory eternal.

Condolences Fidelma, Siobhán, Maeve, Eamon and all the family on the loss of Jim. I remember your many family trips to Ireland, to Newhouse, and Tinnokilly, Waterford, and Dublin. He was lively, and funny and a unique character and spirit. He built a great life in Canada and always stayed connected to Ireland where he will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace, and I hope the many good memories you have of Jim will help you through this difficult time.
To the Muldowney Family. It is with great sadness I hear the passing of Jim. He was one of the great people I had the privilege of getting to work alongside at the rowing club. He had great passion for sport, family and life. Remember all the good times you’ve experienced. My sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers to you all.

My deepest condolences to Jim’s family, he was a good friend and a professor loved and respected by all of us. I met Jim in the year 2000, when we organized The Americas Conference in Mérida-Venezuela, at the Universidad de Los Andes. Professor Marcos Lizana, who died last year, was a close friend of Jim’s, he introduced me to Jim the first time we met.
Have a good trip dear and respected professor.
Sincere condolences to Fidelma and the Muldowney and O’Gorman families. As a graduate student in Mathematics at the U of A in the 1990s, he had a huge positive influence on my life and career. It was a joy to know him then and to have kept in touch since. He was a highly accomplished mathematician and outstanding teacher, who led by example and rejoiced in the successes of everyone around him. My deepest sympathies to Fidelma and family. I worked with Dr. Muldowney during his tenure as Associate Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and Chair of the Graduate Scholarship Committee. His wisdom, kindness, and delightful sense of humor made it a pleasure to know him. He was well-liked and respected by all.
My deepest condolences to Fidelma and family. This is very sad and unexpected news. I knew Jim ever since my undergraduate days in Alberta in the late 1960’s, and I always enjoyed seeing him and Fidelma at various conferences. It was a privilege to have known Jim. May he rest in peace.
Jim was a respected mathematician with a very long track record of contributions to the academic and sporting life of Edmonton. Only last October he and Fidelma treated me to a lovely lunch out there, when I picked his brain about 60+ years of Irish maths people in Canada. What a memory he had!
Jim brightened any meeting with his whit and interesting mathematics. He is dearly missed.
Prof Muldowney was a huge inspiration in my life and I will miss in deeply.
